"I was one of those who spoke out against his action then. But time has a way of clarifying past events, and now we see that President Ford was right. His courage and dedication to our country made it possible for us to begin the process of healing and put the tragedy of Watergate behind us. He eminently deserves this award, and we are proud of his achievement."

From:
Remarks delivered by Senator Edward M. Kennedy on presenting the 2001 Profile in Courage Award to President Gerald R. Ford and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Congressman John Lewis, May 21, 2001.

Mother of God who is that person on the right? He looks like he should be the one in the casket today.

That's Robert Dole, ex-Senator from Kansas, Ford's running mate in '76.

Who was ford? Didn't he invent the motor car?

I remember bush senior, Clinton, Reagan, Kennedy....but Ford?

must've been a very low-key dude. The John Major of American politics.

Despite the spin, he was just a caretaker president.

twg:

Your trademark dismissive manner reveals how little you know about his presidency. What does it say when a political leader in Congress has dear friends on both sides of the aisle. Moreover, former Senator George McGovern, whose 1972 presidential campaign was beleaugered by Nixon, revealed last night that he and his entire family voted for Ford over Carter in 1976. Carter later befriended Ford, probably grateful for the latter's decision to pardon Nixon and thereby practically hand him the presidency on a silver platter.

Stick to posting on things you actually know something about.

nothing you wrote suggests he was a good president, but instead a good man.

I would think that one naturally follows from the other. And indeed that was certainly the case with Ford, a good man and a good president.

Nothing wrong with quiet efficiency in the Oval Office.

well President Carter is a very good man, but I don't think many would argue he was much of a President.

Ford pushed and signed legislation to let women into the armed services, negotiated and signed the Helsinki accords, paved the way for the peace negotiations between Egypt and Israel later secured by Carter, reduced acrimony between Democrats and Republicans in the wake of the Nixon resignation, and brought normalcy back to America.

All in about 26 months in office. Not great, but hardly forgettable.
