So my friend at home are 'doing Asia' this summer. They are planning on going to India and then coming to Korea before they head to china and do whatever else they are doing. What's the cheapest/ best way to get from Delhi to Seoul? Is flying directly from India the best option or is there a train to East china they could take and then get the ferry across?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd say fly to bangkok then get to korea from there

Yeah, that is what I'd suggest (flight to bangkok).

There are no open border crossings between India and China, so they can't go overland to china, then take a train.

At least if you're in bangkok, you can get a cheap ticket to a country bordering china (or fly to china itself), where you could then do the train trip.
