Anybody here ever catch the boys out on tour before? I first time I saw the Dead was in Detroit at the Palace in 94. Jerry opened up with Touch of Grey. I was hooked for life...
As for Phish....the Great Went. Summer of 97. Good times. Mukisupa Policeman. Though if im not mistaken second set had a killer Maze.

Anyone else here. Would love to hear your first show and any experiences that you may have had.

Grateful Dead was one of those bands I never "got" in high school..I was mostly into metal...hard rock....progressive etc. But when I hooked up with a few hippies in college....I started to understand the power of the Dead.... "Eyes of the World" is such a great song...

I went to about 30 Phish shows, saw the Dead a couple times. That whole time was a haze for me, wouldn't trade it for anything.

Can Phish claim a generation and the children of a generation of fans?

If they play to both generations...just like the Dead did. Even though Phish had broken up, never say never, so I would say it is still possible. They are all still alive and kicking. Laughing

Pimp, you probably heard that one on the CD Without a Net if I had to guess. They got Branford Marsallis on saxaphone. 18minutes long and a beauty. Nice intro....

Let's hope not. If there is a god, let's pray he slays them and all their kin for three generations and their oxen shall bear no fruit nor shall their hens layeth the egg; and they shall wander in the wilderness for 40 and 8 years.

Neither.

However, my 2 high school buddies followed Phish for a summer and left me their 'happy plants' to grow in the woods next to my house.

They had a great time.

Unfortunately, while I greatly admire the talent that both bands have, a lot of their music just never satisfied my musical tastes. I think it's because a lot of their music is recorded on live equipment and sounds grainy. My friend used to say that it gave them an "organic" sound, but I thought it just sounded like good music on a high school garage band 4 track.

Anyway, they are both cool, I like Ben and Jerry's ice cream, weed is good, granola is healthy, damn the man, save the whales and all that...

Yeah I used to think the same thing...I used to thing it didn't sound "tight" enough..no punch...it was not until years later...where I learned that the grateful dead...even though I don't listen to them often..deserve high praise...

Daegu Kid....yeah it was without a net..isn't the original studio version about 5 1/2 minutes long???

I've been to 40 Phish shows and 10 Dead shows. They are two totally different bands and each unique. Sure there are common links, Shakedown St in the lot, travelling fans, taping of shows, etc. BUt when you get down to the music, the only similarities are they can extend a 5 minutes studio song into 20 minutes or more, they never played the same setlist, play great covers.

The Dead were a blues/country band first, then started delving into jazz. Remember the difference in era's. Jerry grew up listening to bluegrass, Phil was a classically trained musician, Pig Pen was the bluesman boozer and on and on.

Phish had influence from the 60's and 70's from all genres of music. You can see it in their musicianship and in the covers they played often. To me, and most Phish fans cringe when I say this, Phish is the best cover band I've ever seen. Frankenstein, Whipping Post, Manteca(jazz standard), 2001, Loving Cup, Boogie on Reggae Woman. The list can go on and on.

If you're looking for some good shows for Phish, check out Kalamazoo 1995, Alpine Valley 1997, Vegas 1998, Big Cypress(7 hours w/out leaving the stage) and more.

My first Dead show was Auburn Hills 1993. Bruce Hornsby's last show while they were breaking in Vince Welnick. Daegukid, the Auburn Hills 1994 show, Aug. 1, was a fantastic show. Love the Midnight Hour. Singing Happy Birthday to Jerry as the second set started. Just a great show.

If anyone is into trading or wants to get together for drinks, dinner and talk about these bands and more. Let's try to set something up.

And remember, whatever you do take care of your shoes.

I would say Hampton '97 was the best show I've been to. I was also at Big Cypress, they were pretty hot those 3 days.

Yeah that was a great night...two nights for that matter. But that second night the boys were cooking! Second set when Jerry did that Stella Blue! When you think he peaked, he brought it again...and they Satisfaction by the Stones cause they were opening up their world tour in Washington that night. What a night! Midnight Hour was deadly as well...they way the sing it and layer over each other with the lyrics! Good times man. I saw them on Spring tour 95 in Seattle. That was great. We (fellow uni Heads) had tickets to the show that never happend....Fall Tour Skydome in Toronto. As she goes....

I remember that day Jerry died though. August 9th 1995. I was in Van, and there were people on the street that knew what was up. Alot of glum folks around town that day.

I would love to come along for dinner, but as my handle goes, im a Daegu-ite and not a Seoulite....but im sure that would be a great dinner with some good chats...

Im not sure about that but wouldn't doubt it for a second Pimp. The boys hated studio albums. Couldn't rock it down like they do in front of a live crowd. I just got finished reading Living with the Dead. Fella by the name of Rock Scully was their tour manager for 20 years co wrote it...some great stories, but some sad ones as well (Jerrys heroin use).

check out this link. Its brilliant! The Deads acid supplier dumped a huge blast of liquid acid into the coffee. Everyone except Hugh his off their head! If you watch it closely, watch the last 3 or 4 seconds and check out the dudes face. Not to mention Jerry at the beginning. Enjoy!

I saw Phish at Metropolis in Montreal in the Spring of '94.

I sold cigarettes outside a Spring '95 Dead show in Charlotte.

I like both bands, but, IMHO, the parking lot outside the Dead show was more interesting than the actual Phish show.

I basically saw the Phish crowd as a subset of the greater Greatful Dead legion.

Lyrically, I think Robert Hunter body slams Trey Anastasio.
