I have what looks like a good job prospect in Iksan. I'm just concerned about the location. Do you know anything about it? It's a small city not far from Taejon. I heard there are about 250,000 people, about 40 foreigners (English teachers). Actually I'd prefer to stay around Seoul but maybe if all is good I'd go elsewhere.

I'm kind of on the job hunt now and was offered a position in Iksan. However I passed down that way last week, I really thought i'd be better off staying in Seoul- more happening. Theres not a lot down there..met another teacher from Daejon, seemed pretty bored with it....

Bowling & cards are the big highlights in our social life. Check it out. A lotta the foreign teachers are pretty cool & not so stuck up & high on themselves as with a few other places round the country.

The job sounds OK down in Iksan. Woe is me though, I'm afraid I'll miss my Starbucks, Subway sandwiches, and bookstores! But maybe I could survive. I may just check it out. Thanks for the replies "rapier" and "guitar dude."

Hey there,

I lived in Iksan for five months last year. It's all right but Seoul is better, especially if you are in any way an urbanite. There are a good bunch of teachers (or, there were anyway) who work in the Language Centre at Wonkwang University. If you live close to the university, you should be fine, in terms of convenience. I lived 20 minutes away - unfortunately down a 4-lane road heading towards some damn highway.

But life is what you make it, right?

I'd say that Iksan is probably no better or worse than any other Korean town of 300, 000 so if you want to live in the 'country', go for it. Seoul's only 3 hours and 15, 000W away.

PS: People stare more there than in Seoul because you are exotic and because staring is not a social faux-pas here.
PPS: But the air is better in Iksan.
PPPS: But good luck finding cheese in Iksan. It's not very good for you anyway.

I would suggest that you keep your heart in Seoul. This is a fine town. Overslept once on the train- missed my stop and woke up in Iksan. Crossed the tracks and caught the next train out of there. Dunno, maybe there was more to the place. The side dishes? I'm just happy to be in Seoul helping to rid the city of smog by breathing regularly!

I was just wondering if I could could revieve this thread. Ive been contacted by my recruitment agency about a job hiring 15 teachers in a private school in Iksan. Don't know which one or anything yet but I'm looking at the area first. The original post was from 2003 so was wondering if much has changed and if Iksan is a good place to live with a good number of english teachers to socialise with, some bars and restaurants for drinking and eating and shops to buy books in english, a few western products such as deoderant etc.

Never did live there, visited once, small town, looks OK if ya want a small town. Koreans consider anything under half a million the countryside, more or less.

I live right down the road from Iksan. I've lived in Jeonju and have NEVER felt a desire to go down there. It's small...what more can I say? The teachers from Iksan sometimes wander over to Jeonju and seem happy enough. It's not THAT far from Seoul or Daejeon so it's not like you are trapped there. If you MUST have a Starbucks to live, DON'T MOVE TO IKSAN. Otherwise, it's alright...
