Anyone ever successfully talk on the phone with someone in Consular services??? The B*(&^s stole my birth certificate last time I applied for a new passport, and now I need it to apply for my daughter's passport... plus I have a hundred questions about the application and her citizenship certificate.
They have an answering service, and I've just left a message -- but I've left messages there before and no one ever called me back! What the trick? Calling over and over until a human answers?
I have very little patience with the people who handle Canadian passports here or in Canada. It took my mom almost 3 months to get her passport! Three freaking months!!!!! |

I've never had any problems with them (renewing my passport, getting married, and asking about my upcoming baby). Was never too hard to get someone on the phone.
Sorry to hear you're having problems. Just try to be patient. They're swamped with work ... and hey, office workers love ignoring phone customers. Don't rely on leaving messages, keep calling back and talking live to people.
Good luck. I'll be in the same boat as you soon (new kid) so I can only imagine how hectic everything is. |

As of January 31st, 2006, passport creation for clients in Korea will be relocated to a central office in Mississauga and clients will receive the same type of high quality and security passport currently issued in Canada. |

wait, wait!
To get your lost passport replaced, you have to go home? Or do you have to wait for it in the mail? |

Everything can be done via registered mail. |

To replace a lost passport you can do it here.
You will need a police report and the same original documents that you used when you got the first one.
It takes 2-3 weeks.

IF you have questions about registering your baby's birth I would be happy to answer them via PM or here. We just finished going through it (2 non-Korean parents so we had to have it all done within 30 days of the birth) and just received her birth registration as well. |

What about a passport which is soon to expire? I had just planned on wandering into the embassy and getting a new one. No chance of that then? |

Don't rely too heavily on appropiate information from the Canada Embassy in Seoul. I e-mailed the consular numerous times, and was provided incorrect information. Upon arriving at the Embassy, with the documents the consulate requested, the consulate would not accept my pictures (didn't state that a photoshop was downstairs), and asked for my police report for my lost/stolen passport (which she never mentioned in any e-mail or phone call). 6 weeks later and numerous emails, phone calls, and calls to Ottawa, I was able to pick up my Passport.
Not to mention, when I picked up my passport, the attendant spoke to me in only Korean! I finally stated "This is the Canadian embassy. I need to speak english. If you cannot, please find a CANADIAN you can". When I return to Canada, I am definetly going to lobby my MLA to rectify the issue of the lack of Canadians working in the Canadian embassy! |

Thanks for the replies. The woman actually DID call me back (oops -- complained here too soon) and then I forgot I made this thread.
I like this part though -- she said, "We never forget to return birth certificates, so you must have lost it yourself." Whatever.
So now I'm going to apply for a new birth certificate and then continue on with the rest of it. Thanks for the offers of advice here and via pm -- may look you guys up on that when I get the new birth certificate and start actually applying. |

Canada is the cheapest money-grubbing country in the world. They pinch every penny until it bleeds.

Well, I'm not sure about that but it does annoy the hell out of me that our passports are only valid for 5 years AND that they (except under certain circumstances) are not renewable! And we can't have extra pages sewed in..... |
