Do not ever count on any kind of plastic in Korea. Murphy's Law will prevail. |

Take out a cash advance on your card before you leave home, and then pay it back right away when you get paid. |

I don't remember seeing a Discover card sign here either. I have both Visa and MasterCard and have never had any problem with either one. |

As an informed credit card user who is concerned about the security and usability of his/her credit, you are surely making jest when you ask whether or not your preferred credit provider is available in Korea.
A carousal through the Discover website would surely provide you with the information necessary to ascertain that no, Discover is not available in Korea. |

The poster asked if you could use it hear not if you could get one here. You might be able to use it in an ATM to withdraw cash.
Keep in mind that any time you use a credit card in Korea and pay the bill in US dollars you are loosing twice. First you loose a little bit on the exchange rate when you make the purchase and then you loose some more when you convert won into dollars to pay the credit card bill. |

I'm gonna be really annoying here.
The only three spelling things which really, really wind me up are:
"looser" for "loser"
"loose" for "lose"
and
"wierd" for "weird"
Write down the second one. Please. Please. I promise I won't bother you again. Feel free to "right" your/youre/you're or anything else, I don't care about those. But "loose"... arrrrgh.. I'm going to scream and go to bed. Sorry again for being pedantic. (I think I've 'loost' it, I'm making anal spelling posts..) |

Well, grammar flubs aside, this bunched pantied poster also said:

...which doesn't refer to obtaining a card. It refers to the fact that the credit card company in question and the services it encompasses are not available in said country.
I weep for the future of his students... |

um, i wouldn't count on anything working here.
First year here (2003-04)had a visa checkcard through my US bank. Never got the thing to work once in a year. Tried every bank in teh country's ATMs. Several different cities. Nothing. WOrked fine in Japan, just not in Korea.
My main credit card (use it for airline miles) only works about half the time. Its a visa. However, when i use my visa check card here (different US bank now) it works everytime.
I would bring over a good bit of cash, and just open a bank account wen you get here. |

Korean stores/establishments do not take it. Beware that they will take American Mastercard and Visa, but those cards might charge foreign currency transaction fee or some similar fee along those lines. |
