Hey Everyone,
Has anyone successfully upgraded to business or first class or is that just a fantasy ???
And if so, HOW DO YOU DO IT???
Cheers |

Yes, I have a few times. I always check in late but you risk being put in a middle seat in the center aisle. |

Since this thread isn't exactly "taking off" I thougt I would put an idea out there that I heard from a friend last year...
Her sister, that is a frequent flyer because of her job, chooses a sit, when possible, beside the seats that are allocated for moms or dads with young children.
And, when they cause a fuss, which she says happens more than not, she asks if there are any seats available in first class because of the bother the young children are causing...
She also said, "Yes ! This does actually work !!!"
I don't have sneakiness in my brain to actually try it out...So I am wondering if anyone has actually tried this or has had to sit near a fussing child and was moved up to a better class out of pitty from the flight attendants???? |

Sorry, we're still all stuck somewhere between "Elusive" and "Illusory"... |

after years of flying, i've only been upgraded once free of charge but, boy, was it a treat. i was going from malaysia to amsterdam (13 hrs). i arrived a little late and he assigned me to a private upstairs cabin in first class on the 747 (approximately 10 rows). the seat extended back into a bed and i had my own screen with dozens of movies and games. there were only 3 of us sitting up there and we had 3 attendants at our disposal. every 5 minutes they were bringing hot towels, drinks, appetizers or meals. i have never arrived after such a long flight feeling so refreshed. |

I snuck into business class a few years ago on the Narita to San Fran leg...was pretty sweet...told them I had upgraded right before the plane left and they didn't have time to check it...
i think they knew but business class was about half empty and I don't think they wanted to shit on me
rather nice of them...singapore airlines
course I'd reserved a vegetarian meal back in coach and they told me all they had left up front was the filet mignon...i wolfed it down and damn it was good!! |

Nov. 2005 took a little vacation to Berlin (from Moscow). Within that I took a cheapo RT flight Berlin to Copenhagen. (Chrisitania- woo!!!) Ran to get my flight back to Moscow (just after getting back from Denmark) and ended up showing the wrong boarding pass to the stewardess. She pointed out 4C and I sat in it. When they came to question me I gave up the same boarding pass and just as I was about to say, "Oops..." they said OK, enjoy your flight....
The flight was short, but the food was good and the best was I got to ride in the BC van rather than the bus from the plane to the terminal. Made the train into the center with moments to spare. The next one was in an hour.
Just last week I asked if my NY to Moscow flight needed any volunteers. They did, my compensation was either 400 bucks in a voucher or business class. Either way I would be routed thru Budapest. I took the money and had them give me a night in Hungary. Paid for my own hotel, but got to see a city I would not normally been able to. |

I was lucky enough to get moved up from Van. to Seoul...don't know why...my name was maybe at the top of the flight roster???
When I flew home I asked if there were any vacant seats and they moved me up.....it's pretty sweet in executive...or business class...whatever they call it |

I fly enough and have enough miles to get automatically upgraded, if a seat is available on any Delta flight within the US. Even if it is only an hour-long flight, the extra room is always a treat for a big guy.
I've been upgraded by chance a number of other times:
Once on Garuda, flying from Jakarta to Seoul. We showed up early for check in and the guy handling the ticket looked at me and said, "You are tall; I will move you up to Business class." Thank you. My gf at the time was appreciative, too.
A couple times on Delta from NY to Istanbul. I got lucky there because they were overbooked in coach and because I was flying alone it was easy to move me up to Business. I think, too, again, that being tall helped me stand out among the people in line and get me the pity factor over having my legs crunched in coach.
Once flying BA from Yerevan to Chicago, with a layover in London, BA computers wouldn't let my travel agent in Yerevan book my seat on the London-Chicago leg. So, I was going to get stuck in a center-center seat. But I was told that if I checked in quickly in London, I might be able to change it. So, I hotfooted it to the check-in site and was initially told that it wasn't possible to get an aisle seat in coach. But the woman there kept me in mind and when a seat in Business came open, she sought me out in the crowd and gave it to me.
In addition to being tall, I think it also helps that I dress neatly and bit smartly when I travel, and am always very polite with the people working at the counters. I make my requests, and if they say they can't do it, I acknowledge being disappointed, but accept that they've tried. I think they appreciate that.
Other times, flying Istanbul to NY and back, I've used miles accumulated to get upgrades. Always a treat. |
