What do I do with my car? Erm..... Sell it, I should imagine.

bills? Set them up as a direct debit then simply transfer money from Korea to you account at home. Make sure that you set up online banking so you can view transactions and be sure to inform your bank so they can provide you with the information that you need to provide the Korean bank.

should I be making a lists of stuff to do. Erm....that would probably help.

any suggestions? Panic Just kidding!

Relax.
Make a list of things you need to do.

With an auto- try to sell it. Buy a new one when you get back.
Find reliable storage for things you won't be taking.
Make copies of important documents and leave the copies with a trusted person or a family member.
Make a will and update life insurance (if you need to do these things).
You will need some things when you land in Korea. Have them ready.

Once you are settled in Korea, you can have someone send you a box or two of clothes and other stuff.

Bills- can you pay online? If yes, then make sure you have a US(?) bank account so you can wire money back and pay your bills from the bank account.

1. Either sell your car or leave it with a friend or family member.

2. Contact your credit card companies and let them know that you will be overseas. Set up a forwarding address for your bills. Set up an online payment system where possible.

3. Start packing your luggage. Most people find that there is not enough room to take everything they want. See where you are at in your packing stage.

4. Buy a Korean language book from your local bookstore. Start to learn the Korean alphabet.

5. Get the address of your school and apartment and send it to your family and friends (if possible).

6. Learn as much about the Korean culture as possible using Daves, the internet, and you local bookstore.

7. Relax...

8. Keep an open mind, be ready to experience new ideas, customs, and thinking processes. Remember that not everyone is your friend. (This includes both your colleagues and foreign teachers that you meet).

9. Relax... It's going to be fine. Cool

Actually, this brings another question. How many of you kept your car insurance? I've heard that if you drop your policy and then pick it back up, you'll lose out on all the benefits of having being insured for x number of years. Is that true?

try to learn korean, eat out at korean restaurants, and watch a lot of korean movies.
what do I need to start doing?
get in order the following:
* sealed official transcripts
* passport
* xerox copies of the photo page of the passport
* extra passport sized photos
* your degree, or a copy of it certified by the Korean Embassy
* cash
and bring extra copies of everything (transcript & certified degree) so you can be prepared to dip out and take up a new job straight away if need be.

yes, make lists. search the FAQ here on daves and check http://wiki.galbijim.com/What_to_Bring%3F for what to bring, preparing to move, etc.

and have a great time in korea!

There are some insurance companies that will not drop a customer if they do not maintain continous service through them. There are also companies that will not allow potential customers to purchase insurance through them unless they have had continous coverage for a certain period of time, usually the last three years. There are also some companies that will raise premiums if the person applying for coverage has not had continuous insurance.

If you are concerned about these things then you can set your policy to a non-drive, storage only policy (not all companies offer this service). The monthly premiums are much lower however they are not as low as most people think. Typically people do not choose this option unless they have been insured with a company for a long time and are concerned about getting dropped, have an expensive vehicle, or have high premiums do to their driving record.

You can also cancel your insurance and shop around for the best deal when you return.
