Hello,
What is the cheapest way to post a 5kg parcel to England?
I went to the Post Office in Gwangju today and purchased a 'Size 3' box. When I asked what the cost would be, the clerk looked in her book and said it would be 60,000 won (or thereabouts).
Since she didn't speak very much English and I didn't speak any Korean, I'm not sure we were completely understanding each other. I was trying to find out whether this was airmail or surface mail. And I also asked for a cheaper option, but again, we were having trouble communicating.
Can anybody help me out? There is no rush for the parcel to get to England. It can take a couple of months if necessary. I'm just looking for the cheapest option.
Thanks. |

| When I send stuff to the UK I'm always sending too late so I get the medium-fast service. That works out to roughly 10,000 per kilo. Not bad. It gets there in about a week. Surface mail would be cheaper no doubt but I've never used it. |

From there, I clicked on English and went to check their international post services to check the prices.
I put in 5000g as my weight and destination UK.
Here are the prices:
EMS (Merchandise) 58,500
EMS Premium (merchandise) 85,000
Parcel Force (air) 44,200
Parcel Force (surface) 20,000
Parcel Force (S.A.L.) 43,000
The rest is printed papers or normal letter rates, which don't apply to you.
So it seems your cheapest option is sending this via Parcel Force's surface mail, which will cost you 20,000 and the risk of losing it.. |

Thanks, tzechuk.
I think I'll settle for the 20,000 won option. |

Btw, I've had trouble with the post office not wanting to inform you of the cheapest rates (surface mail). After asking them repeatedly what the slowest and cheapest route to send stuff home is, they still tell me the rates for airmail (which arrives one week later).
The word for surface mail is 선편 (seonpyeon). Be sure to use that and you should succeed in overcoming the confusion.
"I want to send this by surface mail." - 이것을 선편으로 보내고 싶어요. |
