I just finished my first year teaching at a hagwon here in Seoul. I really liked the school but I was working overtime every day. Anywhere between 36-40 hours a week. The extra money was nice but unlike most other teachers I did not come to Korea for the money. I would love to have more time to do other things. Like learning the language.

So I am now searching for my second job here in Korea. Specifically in the Seoul area. I'm trying to get a job with 30 hours a week or less.
How difficult is it to land a job with lower hours? Am I right to assume that those jobs will be outside of Seoul proper (like Ilsan for example)

I would love to read your feedback.

I don't think you need to look outside Seoul. I have only worked her a little while, but my job is for 16 hours per week at an elementary school. I got it through the hagwon I substituted at last month. The full time teachers at the hagwon only work 33 hours per week. We all make respectable amounts of money. Just look a lot. And probably don't go through a recruiter. Try to talk to hagwon directors.

Well...I have been here for over two years now. My current job is in Masan and I teach roughly 80-85 hrs a month for 1 700 000 (teaching all adults). Needless to say this is a much better existence than at a kiddie hogwan. I suggest that you shy away from the standard 2.0 /30 hrs contract. It might mean lower pay...But you will enjoy your time here a lot more.

Good luck...

You could always try what an ex-work colleague did: just drink so much at night that he didn't make it into work half the time. Wink
