FBI Busts Emigration Fraud Ring
The Korean-American community is in shock after U.S. authorities broke up a ring selling fraudulent documents to help Koreans emigrate.
Two attorneys, Steven Y. Lee and his partner Jordan N. Baker, were arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Aug. 28 on charges of forging emigration-related documents and selling U.S. work permits for $10,000 to $50,000 to 58 Korean clients.
The U.S. agents made the bust after examining 60 of 150 applications submitted by the legal office Lee & Baker for work and immigration-through-employment permits and finding 58 of them to contain falsehoods.
The FBI estimated that Lee and Baker had made $1 million through the scheme. If convicted, they would probably face up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines each.
