have shocked myself by how quickly i've adapted to life in korea. not being particularly well travelled, i expected to find it a huge culture shock, but have had an absolute ball since my arrival, and despite problems ranging from one room apartment (for 2) and hagwon politics which i expected, i am loving it.
however, have found myself every so often being stricken with emotion, literally driven to tears in an instant and then within a second feeling completely fine again.
just been listening to radio back home to a bouncy little dance track & cried like a baby at the thought of not having a good old boogie with my hommies for another year!
anyone else find homesickness comes in these mini waves? |

Yeah my homesickness did come and go. But what made it go was going out and meeting new people + doing new things. If you sit at home dwelling on what you are missing, then you are going to feel down. |

Try to learn how to "Watch" you emotions, to detatch from them. Happy or sad, learn to observe them and not to identify with them. There is tremendous freedom in this. When you feel suddenly sad, just witness the emotion from that deep point, as if the emotion were on a movie screen. Breath, let it take its course, clean your room or take a walk. Keep breathing and watching while smiling inwardly.
Take care to get regular exercise, and learn how to take joy from little things, like a bit of sun coming though your window in the morning. Listen to the laughter of your students. This brings you into the moment.
Remember, you are not your emotions. Emotions come and go, whereas you abide.

Hey Omkara's advice might seem creepy but it's gonna do me the world of good.
Being here is one thing - I'm used to living abroad BUT lately I've been hit hard by having a gf back home who came over for winter break. I think 'watching' my emotions is what's going to get me through this.
They are very real, and the tail can not wag the dog. |

You'd be surprised how often it happens to old timers too. It comes, it goes...you'll get used to it. Wait till you go back home (If you decide to stay more than a year or two) and experience reverse culture shock! |
