| Well, if you're gonna do classics, how 'bout a Korean adaptation of "Animal Farm" (plenty of big pigs being hauled around to play lead roles...) |

Okay.
We shall meet at Woldhound Pub in Itaewon on Sunday 21st January. In case anyone doesn't know where it is, I think we should meet outside Burger King at 1.30 and then go to Wolfhound from there.
Hope to see you then.

| great idea. Would love to join in. But Seoul is too far away for me. I've always thought that Emile Zola's "Germinal" desperately needed a film adaptation. |
It's been years since I read "Germinal". Of course I read the English translation. I really liked Zola and it's Preface to the Second Edition. Zola would be easier to make into a film.

Just a reminder, we're meeting outside Burger King in Itaewon at 1.30pm on Sunday 21st January. We will then go to Wolfhound pub.
Bring notebooks, pens, open mind and some material if possible, any writing or well known short story collections.... As most important thing is to get some material we can all see and read before any decisions are made. I think working from something already finsihed would be best possibly for first project.
We'll just be getting to know each other really and throw some ideas around as to what to start on, and how, where, and when.
Okay, laters

A couple of people have asked along the lines of - what genre are you thinking of? What is the project you're working on..? etc...
Just like to make clear the following once more...
It's an initial meeting to discuss and see what ideas we have and which ones the majority like most.
I (perhaps naively, I know) decided to set this whole thing up, with nothing concrete in mind as a first project.
I guess we'll have to see for ourselves, like when you're at uni and do group work for the first time. You have to work something out gradually...
If we have nothing, we'll have to work on something, I guess...
Being realistic, I think it could take a few weeks or a few meetings over a few weeks to get something to work on.
And so far we only have a dvd camera, no external lighting or sound equipment... Doesn't bother me though.
I hope people are going to be okay with that...
If not and you guys who are coming feel uncertain about that - okay I've got an idea.
I suggest that the theme for the first project is a contemporary day set, loosely based adaption of Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Tale Tell Heart.'
Two main protagonists. One brutally murders the other for outwardly trivial reasons, yet driven by a strong complusion and irrational aversion to the other, who just sets some deep loathing in this perhaps, disturbed, solipsistic, highly strung individual. Creating a mood will be of utmost importance (think Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver perhaps and how wound up he gets over things) and also the contrast between the outwardly pointless of the act to anyone but the protagonist (as shown in the visual images) and perhpaps visual signs or voice over monologue detailing our murderer's thoughts and inner conflict etc... I'm thinking very Dostoevskian, Nabokovian 'laughter in the dark' style houmour here.
Then the fear of discovery ensues. Hey, perhaps there could even be something left unanswered. Like did he do it...? Or perhaps his motives are left unclear...
Or perhaps we can open with a very brutal and vivid chase and murder scene along the icy banks of a stream like the one near my apt, followed by images of all the petty things that annoyed him about this fellow who could be a friend, a coworker, a brother even, presented as a montage, ending with our man panting, stradlled atop the butchered corpse, grimacing in ecstasy... Kind of shallow, but I just like the idea of presenting the theme that murder and other things in life don't always have a big explaination, but can be just mundane... Kind of funny...
I don't know, could be a foundation anyhow...

Wont be a public performance and we wont be making any money from it. Not an issue.
If I remember rightly, the busan people were trying to charge money or at least were presenting some kind of performance in public.
No one can stop you filming a movie here in your spare time (unless in places such as govt offices or train statiopns etc) any more than they can stop you filming a home movie or a movie of your travels in Korea...
Well, that's my take on it anyway.
Hey, if anyone has any info to the contrary though with links to the official info that backs it up, please send it to me or post it on thsi thread.
Cheers

Well, can you guarantee no profit could ever be earned from this? The film or the ideas of the film not sold? I doubt it. More importantly, your assurances may hold no water with immigration.
To further illustrate: can't help out at a friend's business. Period. Can't volunteer. Anywhere. Can hold a public performance. Etc.
A film IS a performance and the filming itself can be observed by those not involved. And will be. Can't be avoided. That said, the info on the Busan folks included a statement about getting a permit, so it's likely possible. Whether immigration will give a rat's butt about that, I don't know.
Just realize that you *may* be taking a risk and that there is likely no *clear* answer... which means you will be at risk, regardless.
It all comes down to risk assessment.
I may be relocating to Seoul and may look you up then.
Enjoy. |

Hi to the guys who turned up on Sunday, thanks for coming, it was nice to meet you. And apologies again for being late....
Can the chap (David? - sorry I partied very hard the night and morning before we met, and am not good at remembering names of people I haven't met often at the best of times) who took everyone's contact details email them to me ASAP please?
I'd like to contact you guys about getting the opening scene filmed. This coming sunday is now a possibility if you're still cool with that as I'm not taking my vacation now and I have it pretty much figured out and don't need a story board, in fact don't really like them...
To anyone else still interested in getting involved, when we have arranged our next meeting, I'll post again on this thread or pm you if I have your contact details.
Cheers

Hi everyone,
I stumbled onto this thread a little late, but I hope not too late.
I think its a great idea and I would love to get involved. I studied film at uni and I have been wanting to get back into it. This club would be perfect.
I have a nice DV camera just waiting to be used if you are looking for more equipment, and I know a place where you can rent lights.
So what's next? Are you guys still meeting up every Sunday?
I guess I'll just keep checking this posting for a reponse.
Hope to hear from you soon |

Well, I've given up.
After having met a few guys, them showing supposed enthusiasm and despite having a decent project actually ready to start filming on - it's fallen through, as people are now not interested or busy or whatever. Haven't even heard back from them since, so hope no-one has stolen my idea and decided to do it themselves....
Am too dissappointed to bother spending my time and effort again as I predict the same results.... So I'll just try to make my film with friends who I know wont let me and the projects down....
Jus thought I'd make a note of that for anyone that has been interested and has wondered why the thread has gone dead...
Ciao

I was really hoping you wouldn't have the same results that I did- god was I hoping that.
PS> Would have been there, but wrecked my bike that morning... |
