was it a crime? Maybe I missed t but she wasnt trying to claim any money from anyone so she wasnt really defrauding anybody. Wheres the crime? If the church community was realy overbearing then I dont see whats wrong. Her only mistake was to show up to the service. |

From the St. Petersburg Times:
Quote: |
Matera was not arrested. According to sheriff's spokesman Doug Tobin, she did not commit a crime.
So why did she do it?
She told the deputy she has attachment problems rooted in childhood trauma. Any time someone gets close, she feels the need to separate.
After she gained several close friends in the choir, she said she had cancer to drive them away.
But it brought them closer.
She said the fake death - the heartbreaking conclusion of an 11-month lie - was her best attempt at sparing everyone's feelings. |
So, I guess it's not a crime. I also don't see any indication that the church members were, what could be considered by most, "overbearing." Maybe in her mind the mere fact that someone wanted to be her friend is "overbearing." Who knows. I does appear, from the stroy, that the woman would benefit from some professional counseling. I hope she gets it.

It depends on the circumstances.
If you are faking your own death to:
avoid paying taxes
avoid paying child support
avoid other serious commercial debts (fraud for financial gain)
avoid court actions
collect insurance, etc.
collect "donations" for family members of the deceased or soon to be deceased for medical/funeral expenses
It is a crime if:
A false certificate of death is filed or your death is reported to any government agency.
The police are notified and start investigating/looking for you, etc. It costs money to investigate/look for the person and it involves filing a false police report.
I don't think the case, as reported in the media, meets the conditions for considering it a crime. But ya never know. |
