[Charlie Brown]I got a rock. Sad [/Charlie Brown]

Actually, a rock would've been cooler than nothing, which is what my school gave us. I did get some candy from a student though. Smile

Two bottles of wine, cheese, an outrageously expensive tie and a button up, silk Ralph Lauren Polo.

Doesn't compare to the grand worth of shit I got at T Day, but I think they are holding off for me birthday!

The gifts given at ChuSok by the employers are not exactly for the employees. The meaning of the gifts or cash is different from that of ordinary gifts. They were given to them for the parents of their employees. Every Koreans buy gifts for their parents on their return home and the gifts were to prevent the employees from going to their parents empty handed. When Korea was still poor the company usually gave them underwares or sox because these were very usefull to old folks especially during the coming winter and then gift box sets of oils and seasoning were invented later. Though life became easier the tradition goes on. These days, i think the gift's characteristic is changing toward family and individual than the parents. This maybe indicating the change in social interest.

Happy ChuSok and a wonderful holiday to all of you~

I was a bit disappointed on Monday and Tuesday for not getting any loot. spent a good couple of hours in my office with the door open waiting for a former or current student to bring in anything, just to let me know that I do indeed work at my job. You see both days the students were practically waiting in lines to get into the Korean professors offices to get on their good sides for the semester, and I was like, man!, somebody is going to unload some gift on me. Wishful thinking, I forgot that I am the foreigner and am out of the loop of gifts.

Though interestingly enough, we're not out of the loop when Beg Week comes at the end of the semester. Even some offerins of loot then, too. But yeah, I also noticed the lineups to the Korean profs' offices.

Weatherman and I are in the same boat.

"I am the foreigner and am out of the loop of gifts."

No gifts.
A few good wishes cast my way.

One student said, "Merry Chuseok."
Another student wished me a good holiday.

I gave gifts and wished many people a very "Happy Chuseok."

Spam, and the Korean culture of deprivation. A quick history lesson for those of you new to this place, and who found nine cans of Spam in your Chusoek stocking: during and immediately following the Korean war, Smoked Ham (i.e. Spam), was about the only real food available in this land, other than the still prevalent boiled grasses, and the American G.Is distributed Spam in order to revitalize an exhausted people quickly and relatively cheaply. Hence, Spam has become an icon of those days, which is why the price quadruples at this time of year, once you package it in a fancy box.
