A few months ago I got stopped by two female missionaries outside of Daegu Station. One of them was not bad looking...I think she was playing the role of 'bait'. I was with two female western friends at the time, and in a bit of a sh8t-disturbing mood:
Missionary: "Do you have a moment?"
Me: "Um, sure."
Missionary: "We'd like to talk to you about Jesus."
Me: "No, I don't want to talk about that, I'd like to talk about sex. Would you like to have sex with me?"
Missionary: "Uh, no!"
Me: (gesturing to the two western girls) "Well, would you like to have sex with one of them? They like girls, too."
Two western girls: (look at each other for a moment, then flash big smile at missionary)
Missionary: "OMOH!" (disappears in a flash)
Me, Two western girls: (crack up laughing) |
The funniest thing I've read on dave's ever. |

I don't disagree with what you've written (especially the implied critique of neo-colonialism), but I just want to draw your attention to the fact that every culture has their own version of all these; whether they are cultures that espouse monotheism, polytheism, pantheism, atheism or any other religious form, or no religious forms. It doesn't matter. Every culture has serious taboos, crimes, misdemenors, etc. which generate guilt, and shame; and are seen as "sin" and worthy of "eternal damnation" of some kind.
God is just a substitute for community and vice versa (Durkheim 1912[1915]). I'm paraphrasing a bit, but; the purpose of religion is to worship society; or as Durkheim is more famous for saying, "God is society, writ large." If god doesn't exist; then the emphasis shifts back to community, where it really was in the first place, and has always been thus.
Every culture also has notions of sacred and profane, with or without a belief in god. They also have myths, with or without god. These are important socio-cognitive tools that human beings, and the societies in which they belong, need to think with and survive (Durkheim 1912, Mauss 1923, Levi-Strauss 1964[1969], Douglas 1966). They represent the deep-seated concerns of a society, and reify the basic social building blocks and patterns of a society. It has nothing to do with delusion and everything to do with survival.
There are a lot of people here, who need to practice `seeing the forest for the trees'. If you have a problem with missionaries, then you should probably start by tracing it back to its origins. Missionaries are just the the effect, the outward expression; of the structures and functions of Western-European societies and their cultural descendants.

OK, I've traced everything back to the problem (The West of course, we're EVIL).. so does that mean that the missionaries will stop screwing with me?
Tracing the problem can't undo it. Tear gas on the other hand.. |

Intellectual exercises do nothing to solve the problem. I recommend incendiary kimchi bombs tossed in a targeted fashion toward the offending parties.
I didn't cause Western Civiliation. I didn't create the situation.
Blame Canada. |

I knew it! Jesus was a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Western European, just like that picture in my aunt's Baptist church! Damn him and his "great commission!" And you too, St. Paul, with your missionary journeys throughout England, Sweden, and the Americas! |

Every act starts with an intellectual exercise--and like posting on Dave's isn't an intellectual exercise? Even a crude one? Of course it is!

Actually, my post had nothing to do with Jesus. You would have known that if you had read it carefully--well, if you had read it at all, even. It might benefit you to read it again. Or maybe not. Whatever. The Christianity we know today is a product of Neoplatonism, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Luther, The Enlightenment, The Industrial Revolution, Modernism, modernist marketing technics, and many other culture-historical factors. If Jesus had never existed, `his' missionaries would still be just as annoying. That's the point.

| I think Canada is the problem. Hey do any of you people like electro or trance music? I might be DJing at the Garden pretty soon. Y'all should come out and scream at me in person.. (just be sure to buy some drinks!) |

I've been fairly successful at fending off the religious zealots who accost me without much hassle. It's even easier when they come to my home.
(sorry for the thread hijack)
My problem is the foreigners who come here to beg for money "for the orphans of blahblah country". |
I had to laugh at this. My Mom was telling me about a missionary nun that talked in her church (Mom's a Catholic...Buddha bless her!). She was collecting money for the "poor children in South Korea"! |

No, I read your post with all its condescending psuedo-intellectual drivel and I understood the point. I was just having a bit of fun on a fun discussion thread. Perhaps you should read the posts again and see how yours fits in... |

You are my new hero! That psuedo-crap is the kind of stuff I would expect to hear at some Portland, OR coffee shop where everyone is trying so hard to be unique that they end up being just like everyone else.
The same kinds of people are the ones that pretend to be Canadian when they're Americans. I'm sick of the attitude that the West is the cause of the world's ills or that the "white man" is keeping the world down and all of that apologist crap. Everyone wants to hide and apologize for the all of the ills caused by the "West." I don't apologize for anything I didn't do. I didn't bring missionaries to Korea, I didn't own slaves, I don't force anyone to buy overpriced coffee or McDonalds. So, I won't be blamed for over-ambitious missionaries either. Nor will I blame "The West." Missionaries aren't prisoners, no one forces them to believe or go out and do their thing.
Church of God was waiting for me last night after work. One of my awesome students gave me the heads-up that some guy was waiting for me and I was able to slip out the back exit..
Obviously, that was caused by the west too. |
