SC First Bank doesn't do anything for Foreigners. I went to the Hwajon Dong Branch in Ilsan. They flat out refused to open an account. They said they do not offer banking services to foreigners. I have lived in Korea for going on three years. I had my arc card with me and my passport. The bank manager was very rude and said some really nasty things about foreigners. I wouldn't suggest anyone banking with that lot.

I've had great service from them since they've been in business. I wholeheartedly recommend banking with them. I opened an account in minutes.

I was denied an Expat card from KEB.

I wonder if there are any other options for a credit card.........without putting up a deposit.

Does Korea have the same credit check systems in place that the US does? Don't they check your credit score with Equifax, etc?

I have two Korean Credit cards. I have a Kookmin, which was originally Housing and Commercial Bank. I renewed it after the first year and didn't pay much attention. They gave me a five year card. I also have a KEB card.

That Samsung Amex sounds interesting.

I don't really use my Amex since getting the Samsung Asiana Anypass card; can use it on the subway and bus, plus 1 mile for every KW 1,000.

This may be a super silly question but where do you go to apply for the Samsung cards? And are the requirements still the same almost four years after the original post?

I applied for a Gold one few weeks ago and collected the card today. It has a 26 million KRW limit of which 6.5 million can be incurred overseas.

(I didn't really need a(nother) card but was attarcted by the ever-so-subtle design)

Ok, how much do you have to pull in to get a 26 Million KRW limit? I'm impressed.

Is the Korean bank book really necessary? Because i have two accounts, but rarely use them. All my money goes into my American Chase Manhatten account.

From looking at my Korean accounts, it makes it seems i am unemployed because there is hardly any activity.

An update would be good.

I saw somebody got a Samsung card a few weeks back.

What criteria do they have for getting a card now. Has it changed since the LG fiasco?

For a Samsung card I only needed my bank information, confirmation of employment at a PUBLIC school and my ARC. No deposit required.

It took about 30 days for the card to appear.

I went to KEB Bank today to try and get a credit card.

They told me that they do not have any Credit Cards for foreigners without a security deposit. They do have an "Expat Card" but that is only available to University teachers and regular employees. They told me elementary, middle, and high school public school teachers did not qualify for the Expat card.

I called the number in the post above and it was quick and painless. After faxing my ARC (front and back) along with my bankbook, Samsung is gonna setup an interview at my school where we finalize the paperwork.

They asked what kind of Samsung card I wanted. I had no idea so I just said regular VISA so they are getting me a T-Class card. 20,000 won annual fee.

Is there a better Samsung card I should ask for? Does it matter which Samsung card you have when you get the discounts at restaurants?
