Watch Billy Madison...The funniest line is what the Haitian gardener answers when Billy asks him to teach him French...It's a classic one. I saw that movie with my buddy and we were the only ones who understood it. We were laughing our heads off while everyone else in the theatre looked at us, hoping we'd translate it for them.

"C'est une perte de temps. Tu es un imbecile. Tu n'apprendra jamais le Francais."

Hollywood...as someone who got French for free (mother is French) I can say that the quote is pretty accurate...it is a tough language to learn due to the complicated grammar (especially verbs!) and structure. However, an English speaker who knows Spanish or Italian will not find it all that hard as he or she will have phonetical references to go by....

Oh, I got French from my parents, but it wasn't free. It came at the cost of having to cope with unilingual anglophone French haters in Canada, which is why that line still cracks me up.

Indeed!

As a one who grew up near Toronto...I can attest to that!

A site that I have followed for years, if you are interested in self-study, is:
http://french.about.com/ . They have a lot of free lessons, vocab builders, idiomatic expressions (always a good thing to learn in the case of French), tests, common mistakes, grammar, and basic conjugation guides.

If you want books, the best out there (also, what the French use), is a series called "Bescherelle". This series includes books on grammaire, orthographe and conjugaison with several new books in the collection such as Dictees. Bescherelle books are a very sound way of helping your French along.

If you are American, please do not bother learning French. An American accent in French is just about the ugliest thing in the world...

Moe, shuy juste un anglophone de naissance... c'est pas ma faute:) j/k

One of my favourite words used in Quebec is char for car... I guess that is no different than South Americans saying caro (spelling) for car...

You're a twit. I'm not only American, I'm TEXAN. I also lived in Paris before coming to Korea.

If you want to keep insulting Americans, feel free, but just realize that your intolerance of Americans just makes you look stupid.

People complain about Americans being arrogant or ignorant. It seems that every culture and country is full of their own particular brand of stupidity.

Obviously, you're representing that faction of whatever country from which you originate.

Not to mention that there are some Texans whose first language is French.

That's just not true. We all know that Texans are all racist red-necks and own oil wells. Canadians are all hockey players and listen to Widespread Panic. Parisians are all rude. And people from Arkansas can't count higher than 21. And people from Portland are automatically smarter than everyone else. And Koreans all eat kimchi. ..oh wait, all Koreans DO eat kimchi!
