The woman in the video that started all of this is my girlfriend, so please keep the discussion on the language, and not the woman. I don;t like hearing people talk about her.

Hahaha, do you know what the real French say about the Quebecois accent Laughing

I've been self studying French and have been looking for more info on self-study. Thanks for the links.

Any one in Changwon willing to teach a dumb waygook french?

I suck at learning languages but the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Learning French" by Gail Stein helped me. I still can't speak much but that is just for lack of trying. It is a fun book and teaches real French (not Quebec French) to beginners.
Almost as fun as "Spanish for Gringos" by William C. Harvey which I recommend for people wanting to learn basic Spanish.
Not sure if you can get books like that at an English bookstore in Seoul but maybe you could order it online.

Good luck Wrench.

Not to mention that there are some Texans whose first language is French.

That's just not true. We all know that Texans are all racist red-necks and own oil wells. Canadians are all hockey players and listen to Widespread Panic. Parisians are all rude. And people from Arkansas can't count higher than 21. And people from Portland are automatically smarter than everyone else. And Koreans all eat kimchi. ..oh wait, all Koreans DO eat kimchi!

Laughing

Lots of Cajuns who still speak French at home and a few first and second generation immigrants from France (a French oil company has employees in Houston) live in Texas.

Obviously you haven't been to France lately. l'Acedemie has replaced and banned a lot of English words. For example, un computer is now un ordinateur and un keyboard is now un clavier. It has become very puritanistic there over the past decade or so. Now, if you are talking about Canadian French, that is a whole other matter and you would be completely right.

J'ai appris mon francais mon mec au Quebec. Je l'ai etudie et j'ai utilise dans les rues de Montreal. C'est une belle langue avec ces mots superbes:) Hey, Homer, do you like rock? You should listen to the Quebec rock band "Les Trois Accords". They're quite awesome.

I'll admit, I do think some people in North America when they speak French especially if they are from certain parts of the U.S. it sounds bad and funny at the same time. However, you should give people credit for trying. I think a language Italian is easier to get down in terms of sounding like an Italian. French takes more work in terms of getting the sounds "right". Of course, I am referring to standard French not Corsican, Lac St Jean, Breton style French. Generally, America is not known as a country that is interested in languages, but I do believe an American recently won an extremely important French language prize, so he obviously knows the language better than many French people, even.
However, he is an unfortunate exception. However, considering that people all over the world are learning English, it doesn't give people such an incentive to promote another language in America.

Anyway, I think Svetlana likes to get a rise out of people....

I have, actually. Don't confuse what you see in the media with how regular people talk.

It is most certainly possible for Americans to learn French as a second language. Some American celebrities have done so. For example, Jodie Foster speaks French better than many Frenchmen. Brooke Shields and Candice Bergen (widow of great French movie director Louis Malle) both speak French quite well, too.

And then there's Jerry Lewis. Laughing Laughing

(I've actually seen his two French movies. Let's just say it doesn't sound like he became fluent in French for the movies like Meryl Streep did with German for Sophie's Choice).

There are quite a few French American celebrities: Angelina Jolie (mom is French Canadian, don't know if she speaks French), Madonna (mom was French Canadian, dito), Paula Abdul (mom is French Canadian, again, don't know if she speaks French), Jack Kerouac, Robert Goulet (originally from Canada, speaks French fluently), Will James (Ernest Dufault, originally from Quebec...http://artmuseum.org/art/cowboy.php), Leelee Sobieski (dad is French, speaks French fluently)...

My personal favorite: Dan Ackroyd (well, technically not an American, but close enough). Grew up in Quebec, mom is French-Canadian. He speak French fluently (with a slight anglo accent).

Salut....
