Yikes. Can you explain this a bit more, please?

It's the same as with kimchi and most other things that look meat-free. Koreans tend to prepare everything with fish paste, egg, or ham, and have no concept of vegetarianism. If you get tofu soup, chances are there's meat in it. |

| Dishes in which there is tofu aren't necessarily vegetarian. The tofu by itself still is, I hope. |

If you get it directly from the store and cook it yourself, yes. If you order any tofu in a restaurant that isn't strictly Buddhist, you're probably eating some sort of meat in it. |

The week I moved to Korea I also got married to a carnivore. I admit that I have been weak and do eat fish 1-2 times a week. It seems even a lot of the soup has some sort of fish broth. It's been a compromise. My husband cut back to only eating fish in the house (he can get steak when we go out), and I try not to constantly feel guilty for causing the death of innocent sea creatures, especially yummy ones like salmon.
I don't find it particularly hard here to stay (mostly) vegetarian, except I tend to eat the same things because I'm not sure what I'm ordering if I branch out. I happen to love the tofu, and I never really like meat, so I'm happy to go out with my friends for kalbi and just eat the side dishes. |
