The asterisk, of course, refers to the fact that you have to sign up for a year of Vonage to get that price. Without the contract, you can pick it up for $299 (after $100 mail-in rebate.)

Now, how many of you would go for this? I'm halfway trying to think of how to get my hands on one and I clearly do not need a laptop. But damn, $300 bucks! That's practically disposable.

Would you buy this?

My laptop, a Fujitsu I paid about 1,800 for has broken a lot. Small things. The SD card reader stopped working, one of the speakers went out, there's something loose that causes some static in the speaker, and one of my USB ports is loose. Oh, and the power supply transformer box thingy fried. Yeah! So much for Japanese quality.

Regarding mail in rebates. Lots of companies offer amazing mail in rebate deals because they find, while a rebate deal gets people to buy, only about 10% of people actually apply for the rebate. Out of those, only a percentage provide the correct information or fill out the form correctly.

Was that a new laptop?

I don't know why out of the 10s of desktops that we have back home and a few notebooks, none of them broke down or has stopped working.

Even the 486DX-33 Acer that I got as my first laptop is still running Windows 95 (and no viruses).

Something tells me that you're using them as skateboards.

If laptops do indeed break down a lot, wouldn't that be all the more reason to get a cheap one?

In any case, I'm not advocating anyone buy this particular machine, I'm just saying that I, personally, an admitted tech junkie who has never owned and still can't justify the purchase of a laptop, am considering picking one of these up.

I mean, consider what you get for $300 in the tech world these days.

I-Pod=$250
Zune=$250
PS3=$600
XBox360=$300-ish
I-station=$400?

The Compaq would have to be an incredible steaming pile of diarrhetic crap before I'd feel ripped off at that price. And it may well be. Who knows? I'm just saying, at that price, it's tempting.

If I was in America, I'd buy it. My laptop's too old & I'm looking for something to replace it.

With a DVD burner & 60GB it already beats my old laptop.

I believe the fine print on the ad says "in store only." So, as I mentioned, I'm trying to think of how to get my hands on one. If I decide to try, I'll probably just have one of my friends pick one up and just pick it up in January when I'm home. Alternately, you could have your friend get one and ship it here.

i asked my brother to take a look at the ad (he works with computers), his response if anyone is interested:
Quote:
The laptop they're offering only has 512MB of memory which is tiny by todays computer standards. You'll spend a lot of time clicking and waiting. If you click too fast, you'll probably crash. Anything under 1GB is unacceptible.

2) Vonage offers internet phone service. Kinda like how cox offers phone service. The cheapest plan is 14.99 a month. Multiply that by 12 months (the minimum service plan) and you've just tacked on $180 on top of what you'll be paying for your laptop.

On a side note: Korea isn't part of Vonage's service area. You'd be wasting your money with it regardless the amount you'd save on the computer.

Look, it costs $300. Tell your brother to find a better, cheaper laptop if he can.

Technically, yeah. Yet, if you sign up in America and have your equipment sent to someone there, it can be used here (I've been using it quite happily for a couple of months. I'd be willing to pay ahead for a year of service since I plan on keeping this phone for a long time...).
