most people are here for the money! if they tell you different they are lying!!!
5.5 a month you will find many people are making that!!
of course you have to work for it!! but some peoples only motivation in korea is money!!
but is 5million a month really that much?? I look at 5 million and think this is BULLSH*T!!! ESL teachers salaries are tapped out at about 6million..
trying to make more than that as a teacher NOT OWNER!! will give you no life what soever!!!
Ill take miami any day of the week!! of course I would want 10K a month! |

Yeah Miami is pretty nice right about now. Your right about the 6 mil mark...at that....you are almost all tapped out. Even at 5.5 I'm working 6 days a week....most of the day too. |

Chillin in the States??? Only temporarily on vacation or if you got lots of jack smack and at least one piece of real estate owned $$$$
Stateside living can be very nice if you got lots of $$$ or a high professional income and live in the suburbs with a nice big car. Outright owning all these materialistic things of course, rather than being on the debt treadmill like many Americans. Damned student loans seem to have me on a similiar treadmill too. I fell for the big lie that it's good debt and yada yada... So it got me a 26,000 USD/per annum (guestimate) baby sitting job in South Korea. How cool! Wow!
What a huge payoff for $40K debt and 4.6 years of tedious study!!!!
I think the travel is the valuable part that is tough to put a dollar figure on, but then you can take vacations to fly far flung places if you got a professional income back in the states...

Yes, it's just about the money and the proximity to exotic destinations on this far side of the world. For me, coming over was not only about the money, but also an entry into Asia in hopes of making connections that can lead to bigger and better career options like teaching business English and making $5,000 US per month in a year from now for a company or privates. This is my goal. Hey, it's legal in Tokyo to do privates as long as you pay tax on your private lessons income so I might go there instead. |
You're in Changwon aren't you Bixlerscott?
This is very far from the truth. I've always had friends here, and good friends too. If you go out to O'Briens, you'll find that about 70% of the regulars there have been in Korea for 3 years or more, including myself (over 5 now). Changwon has one of the highest retention rates for foreign teachers in Korea becuase its one of the better cities to live in (cleaner and more spacious than your avarage Korean city) and has a close-knit supportive foreigner communtiy here. The foreign teachers here don't "just split". If you come out to places like O'Briens and I.P you're bound to make friends, unless you're lacking in the social skills department.
Here's an idea for you, come out to the regular Thursday night Texas hold'em poker tournament (only will cost you 10,000won, 20,000won if you stay for the second game, plus drinks) and you'll meet many of the long term teachers in Korea including myself. Many of the newbies in Changwon find it a great way to meet other teachers here and make friends. We usually have about 15 to 20 players to start, sometimes more so there are plenty of different types of people for you to meet. It usually starts between 10 and 10:30pm every Thursday night at O'Briens. Go to the O'Briens website and click on the poker tab at the top to find out more. Everyones welcome. |

Yeah, the best money can buy! I was sitting with a friend on South Beach the other day, and we were checking out the plastic surgery victims. When it is all around you, the fake breasts and overly stretched faces start looking obvious and comedic.
The worst example down here is the older woman with the anorectic body and super stretched face, sporting a pair of grapefruit in front of her. It is a bad, sad look.
I do miss Korea, and, in fact, I do miss the beauty of South Florida when I am there. But there is a rugged and sincere beauty to Korea, also.
Down here I sometimes squint at the clouds on the horizon and imagine them mountains. I miss the ragged Korean skyline.
It is good to like where you are and appreciate it for what it is.
This ain't no Eden, either- hurricanes, tornadoes, shrinking coastlines, and, in the winter, we do get cold weather at times. At times the superficiality of Americans in Florida (whether from here or New York) makes me long for the spiritual and emotional depth of korean princesses and K' boys! |

After taxes, that will get you a studio on South Beach! 
But, yes, if all things were equal, and I made relatively the same pay here as I did in Korea, I would be more inclined to remain here (between long travels abroad, bien sur!)
By the way, do you guys know Zeke's, on Lincoln Road? Three dollar quality beers (microbrews, Belgian and French ales, etc. included) and a table amidst the insanity of So Be. Check it out when you are in town, and soon, because the Armani and Chanel clad cultural police are sure to squeeze it out soon for bringing in the riff-raff who want $3 beers and and free table. |

Oh Bigbuds had to quote me and eat this one up, even in red font. Dam, if I wanted to change this post, then I cannot. I just pissed on myself permanently by saying anything 
Do people have Fridays off who are going to O'briens at a late 10:30PM on Thursdays in Changwon as BigBuds mentioned? Maybe they teach at hagwons that start at 2 or 3 pm rather than 9 or 10am. Perhaps...

Most of the poker players have to work on Friday and some of them have earlier starts than you. 3 or 4 of the players work at Changwon Uni and don't have to work on Friday and as for myself, if I feel like getting out of bed on Friday, I might work but then again I might say screw it. That's the benefit of working for yourself  . |

I got an F2 visa
Speaking of real estate I just picked up a 3 bed 2 bath condo in Central Florida this week while vacationing. They just finished construction on it. A new planned community that is the fastest growing in Central Florida...bound to increase in value 50% within 3-5 years. Unfortunately, I gotta get back to the won extraction business in 2 weeks. |
