I just arrived, and was happy that my cable was already hooked up -- that is until I discovered that I must have the crappiest cable package in the country. I have 40+ channels, but only about 4 in English and no CNN, BBC, AXN, Star Movies, etc. I had all of these is Taiwan and the Philippines. What gives? How much do I have to pay to at least get the news and a few decent sitcoms? Is this option available? I'm in Ulsan (if that means anything).

Thanks

Welcome to Korea. A land where they dont speak English an thus feel no need to rebroadcast all of the ameican networks.

However, AFN is in English, and is Arirang TV. OCN shows a lot of American movies, and CSI on Monday to Thursday.

And SBS Sports and Sky KBS show wrestling.

But it all depends upon your cable company. If they dont see a demand for BBC World in your area, then they wont carry it.

Calling Arirang English-language programming is a bit of a stretch, though.

What? You don't want to hear about Korea all day long?

AFN isn't available everywhere unfortunately, and I doubt it is in Ulsan where the poster is from.

I have Sky Life, which is satellite TV, and it's great.
I love movies and it has about 20 movie channels, and I pay about KW 8,000 for Catch On/Catch On Plus (2 for 1).
Price: 23,700/month
Channels: CNN, MGM, TCM, Sports, etc.
Also, there are about 30 satellite radio stations and pay-per-view. The latter costs KW 1,500, maximum, per movie.
For more information call Sky Life at 02 2003 3074(English speakers).

What- TV Kyopo?

Young Korean-Americans should be told that television careers await them in Korea - newsreaders, gameshow hosts - a whole network just for them.

Though they do get a few white ESL teachers on there on occasion..

I'm not quite sure who their target audience is.

You should live in Yongsan, where they force you to buy a 100,000 won converter just so you can get CNN -- AFTER your cable bill triples.

They scramble CNN because they know the foriegners here want it, and they charge a premium for it.

I don't have CNN because of this.

Well I think there are some good movie channels available, like Catch On. It seems to vary with location though. Every "gu" in Seoul seems to have different channels or at least diff. numbers for them. "Discovery" is good.

Mapo gu does the same thing. however you have to pay 25,000 per month extra to get it.

I paid 80k installation, but the box is mine, as for the dish, I don't think so, but who knows.
Best thing to do is call the number and get the facts; they speak English.
