Hi
I'm interested in working at a uni in Korea, after a year at a Hagwan. Can anyone help me with links and sites to check out and how best to apply?
I have TEFL intensive course, and one year's experience. Please help!

| too late to apply now, but at least you'll have time to do your own research. this topic has been done to death. run a search and read the stickies. a lot of universities advertise on dave's. with only a year at a hakwon, and if you only have your BA, it'll be slim pickings for you. |

List of colleges and universities in South Korea.
I suggest dressing well, walk in and ask to speak to someone in the English Department. Bring all relevant documents. Of course, spring semester starts in about a week and a half, so aim for fall semester. Don't be discouraged.

You'd have a hard time finding a god job with what you have.
Keep an eye out now. There is always 1 or 2 people who cancel/can't come at the last min and the uni will need someone asap. |

Try Sejong University.
I hear that they didn't offer contracts until a few days ago, and a lot of teachers moved on. I read that they are hard up for teachers now.
I have no idea how true this is. Anyone know more? |

God jobs are tough to come by regardless of your qualifications. Been trying for decades. |

As Pak Yu Man said, with one year of Hakwon experience and a B.A. (+ a TEFL) you will not have access to the better university positions.
Most good positions require 2+ years of experience (preferably with references) and a M.A.
Some universities will substitute the M.A. requirement for more experience (say 3+ years).
Good luck! |

Put your resume up on every job site you can find with a title like "University Position wanted, qualified candidate, Advanced TESL" or something like that.
A few of them will be looking now due to last minute dropouts, or because people were juggling decisions until the last minute, or due to management incompetence or something like that.
With the TESL and a years' experience in Korea you have a fairly decent chance if a uni is desperate for a teacher for March 1 (or maybe 5th). There's all kinds of reasons why they might not have sorted it out yet.. and you may luck in to a great job. Give it a go. |

| Also look at the Universities that are off in the middle of nowhere and don't really give much of a vacation and are probably combined with institute teaching. Get that job and then use it as a stepping stone to come back closer to Seoul or whereever you want to be. |

I just spoke with them today. There are two f/t positions left, interviews are this Friday. If I were in Korea, I'd go for it. |

It isn't too late to apply for the Spring! A significant number of new hires are going to bail out for one reason or another, leaving Uni's desparate to hire someone fast.
Trust me. It works. |

| You can always try Japan. There are lots of university jobs there. Only problem is that the Japanese students are bigger slackers than the Korean students. |

| For a good university position, plan on having minimum requirements of a master's and one year+ teaching at the college level. |

In general, this is true. The "better" positions are closer to 3 million in pay for around 12 hours base, right? Those positions are slowly going by the wayside, but definately are nice to snag.
You can get lucky at a lower uni, however. Although I have my bouts with general administration and my boss, at times, I'm becoming quite happy here. I work more hours, and pay is around 2.2 base, but I have a nice 2br villa with a roof and more storage rooms up there (greenhouse too). They also put me in a brand new office with AC, new computer, sink, etc.
Good can mean a lot of things. You could easily say this job sucked, too, but it depends how you view the situation. I'm currently happy, now that I have learned how to avoid as many landmines as possible in this place. |
