Taken from NYT's http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/18/fashion/weddings/18Wong.html?ref=weddings
"Boji Wong, a lawyer, and Benjamin Berkman, a record executive, were married last evening at Capitale, an events space in Manhattan. David N. Dinkins, a former mayor of New York, officiated, and Jill Hausman, who is both a rabbi and a cantor, took part in the ceremony.".....
Her name in Korean would be "왕보지"
Can you just imagine the conversation between Korean and her?
"Hi, my name is Jason, nice to meet you."
"Same here too, my name is Boji"
I could just imagine the horror.
Okay, it seems some of you are well traveled, do you know any words that is or can be either embarassing or offensive to natives? |

In Korean, there is one word, " 엉덩이" that describes both the "hip" and "buttocks" which has been known to cause confusion. |

I can think of no English words that would cause offense to a Korean. |

"질" can mean "vagina" so that's probably the reason. |

"Jill" kinda sounds like a Korean word meaning death (or kill) 즐
"Barbara" is another name that is greeted with giggles. In Korean it means "stomp"
And as I learned over this holiday weekend, the name "David" is unbelievably funny to all those over 40 for the fact that it sounds like "baby" ... ahhh, soju and funny words. Good times. |

I had one class where everyone thought that the name "Edward" was hilarious (I think it may have been an inside joke, though...) |
