My boss has been humming and hawing about closing the school for awhile so just over a week ago I told her she should make up her mind because the semester was ending and I had a good opportunity at another school in the area if she just decided to close. (I wouldn't normally tell my boss that I was being recruited by another school but I wanted her to make up her mind and I thought it might take some of the pressure off if she new she didn't have to worry about any financial obligations to me.)
She told me she was going to stay open so I said fine I'll stay. But I told her if she changed her mind in a week after I turned down this job I'd be really pissed.
* * *
So I come into work today and she's not here. She didn't tell anyone where she was going. So the Korean teacher and I let the kids play and wait for some info.
I get a call halfway through the day from a friend of mine at the other school asking if I was really comming in for an interview?!? I had no idea what he was talking about because I certainly hadn't applied for the job.
Turns out my boss had been hassled by her parents over the holidays to close the school because she's been borrowing money from them to keep it open. So she called the school I was interested in to see if the position was still available and make me an interview without telling me anything about it.
It gets better. While she was AWOL two new sets of parents came by wanting to sign up. So now she's all wishey washey about closing the school again. I want her to decide to close it so that I can get a letter of release with no hassles. I've had enough of this shit. If she stays open we'll just be talking about this again next week and I'll be out a good job working with people I like in a school I know is stable. However, if I quit I know it would destroy any chance this school has of surviving, if that's even possible. She can't afford to hire another teacher. She's not evil or anything just immature and indicisive, and I'm not malicious.
What would you do? |

I would go where you can get the best working conditions. If your boss is constantly on the verge of closing her school, I would waste no time in finding another job.
I would get out while the going is good and she still has money to pay your salary with.

Leave! If not now, in a very short time there won't be a school. You need to consider what is best for you. I admire your loyalty, but in this instance it could be very misplaced. |

I would even consider a little bit of loss and get a stable job (consider public school). It's the best time for you to choose and pick your ticket now. |

Rats abandon sinking ships. Who's smarter? You or the rat?
The boss set up the interview. Take the new job and if your current boss said anything use the old "you don't want me here" card. Go where it's best for you. |

Why? If you did your homework before you came, you would realize this is a common occurrence.
I sympathize with your position.
Hopefully, you know the answer is to leave. |

The ONLY person who will look out for your best interest is not mommy, daddy, a hakwon owner, etc., it's you.
Obviously the school has problems which may lead to you not getting severence, etc. let alone a paycheque.
What, three months later she decides to close and you're out in the cold. |

The signs are there. Get an LOR and switch over. Knowing too much about the school's business can be beneficial or it can be a drawback. Company's back home can just up and tell you they are selling and you'll be out of a job, but at least you get 2 weeks or more notice. That's the thing. It shouldn't be a worry, but it is. Thing is, here in good old Korea, if she goes out of business, you won't get a month's notice pay. Maybe you could, but it won't be offered.
You stand to lose some money if you switch, but it could be better in the long run. Say bye bye to the severence pay divided by twelve times the number of months you've worked there. Not a fortune. Kind of hurts, but better than living in paranoia.
Hope the next job isn't the same.
Then again, it's really hard to tell. There are plenty of jobs out there. You could forget about this other school and hang on and get your severence. If you're anything like me, you'd hate to lose that. Your boss stand to benefit if you quit.
Make your pick. |

Whatever you decide, your director is going to skip out on paying your severance and ticket home. She's either going to pass you on or close the doors when it's convient for her. Wake up! |

Thanks for responding to my rant.
I quit. Got the letter of release and start at my new job on March 1. I'll stay here until they graduate and then go. She has submitted to closing the school.
I knew what I had to do but it's never easy knowing you're going to destroy someone elses buisness and dream. She is a good woman and I hate to hurt her but I have to do what's best for me. |

How do you figure that YOU are destroying someone's dream and business?
If she wanted to be successful at it she should have had better business sense or gone into something instead of the English hagwon business which will all know is a saturated market.
Man, she wouldn't cry any tears over sacking you.

I know your right Ilovebdt.
I go between telling myself I'm doing the right thing to knowing that my leaving is the tipping point. I know it's not my fault the buisness failed but it's stil painful to watch. |
