Eh.. researchers aren't looking for copouts and excuses for lazy parenting. They look at data and make conclusions. You won't find a single social science researcher who thinks that images and other subconscious messages to girls do not have a general negative result (from the victimized female's perspective).

Yes, and it doesn't seem fair or reasonable to once again, once again put the burden of blame on parents, even if they ARE ultimately responsible, while at the same time economic reality demands that both spouses work and women themselves are the biggest critics of stay-at-home mothers. Parents can do a lot, and some can do a lot more than they are, but you can't expect parents to play 24/7 media & culture cops until their kids reach adulthood with fewer & fewer hours of "quality time" available. They need some help from the government and from media industry self-control. The West needs a big moral flea-dip! 
What I'd like to see is the remnants of the Taliban put in charge of montoring & censoring all media images & cultural messages that young girls might be exposed to until they reach age of consent. And then I'd like to turn Mullah Omar's boyz loose on the SuicideGirls(.com). Not that they're such a bad influence, but chicks with attitude & body piercings annoy the shit out of me. |

The East is just as laden with cultural depictions of female normalcy. Jeez, especially Korea. I saw this ad one Naver once where a girl who I wouldn't even consider overweight was depicted, and various parts of her body were compared to animals. Samgyeopsal stomach, elephant legs, fatmonster arms.. I showed a picture of Beyonce to some students and many of them commented on how fat she looks, as she was turned to the side and thus her stomach was smooshed up a bit. Cultural expectations of women are alive and well here, at least in Korea.

Bah I picked up one of those girls a coupla days after Sep 11th in NY and got some 'terror s*x' (as it was briefly termed) and she was freakin awesome. Anyway as I've only met 1 of them, and she was 100% awesome I think your comment sucks. If you introduce me to another 50 or so of them I might change my mind though. |
