Alright, daddy's been lingering around diff. comp. sites. A few questions:
You all know my rig, so, if I change my 677mhz ram to 800, will I notice any difference? Currently, this is what I have in my computer:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1882393&sku=O261-8032&SRCCODE=WEBBP009
I was thinking about getting this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=2583140&sku=C13-8022&SRCCODE=WEBBP009
Thoughts?
Also, If I do upgrade, will anyone be willing to buy my old ram? If so, make me an offer; it's only 6 months old.
Second, for an average (not high performance) digital recorder (so I can download what I record onto a computer), what would you recommend and around what price am I looking for? I hope to spend between 200 and 300. Is that even feasible?
Thanks guys.

I think you should just give me your old ram. I've had a bad day, and if you just give it to me, you can enjoy the satisfaction of helping a man who was down on his luck. |

How could you notice a difference in moving to a higher spec RAM? Are you changing the FSB of the CPU that dramatically? So much so that your current RAM is unstable or the timings are too relaxed?
RAM speed is and was overrated. The thing to keep in mind is you want as close to a synchronous system as you can. This means RAM that is running in spec with your FSB. An 800 spec RAM will only show a noticeable difference in the area of stability, as it pertains to you. Overclocking 667 RAM can result in system instability, and one may need to go to a higher spec to alleviate the stress on the RAM.
I bought PC4500RAM for my setup, as I knew I would be overclocking. PC4200 RAM would be too stressed and the timings would have to be too loose to achieve stability, so I went with higher spec RAM. At stock speeds, there are absolutely no gains from higher spec RAM.
Therefore, I surmise that you won't see any difference at all from putting new RAM in your current configuration. Look at the timings. Tight RAM timings come into play when doing a lot of encoding, and even then, time saving is only on the perceivable level when doing huge crunches. In the real world (gaming, surfing, Word) a 3-3-3-6 RAM won't feel much (if any) different from a 2-2-2-5 RAM. Gaming? Well, faster is better, but there is a point of no return on certain hardware. RAM is one of those.
If you start to get instability in an overclock, then upgrade. If you are doing lots of encoding, then upgrade. If you are doing lots of online comparative butt-sniffing with synthetic benchmarks, then upgrade (this is one area where RAM timings are important). If you are bored and have an excess of cash and looking for every little way to squeeze an extra cycle out of your RAM, then upgrade.
Honestly, it sounds like you want to keep your rig cutting-edge, which is understandable. However, a quick reminder that it's a costly endeavor and you will never see an end to it may be in order. However, if you must upgrade, look more at timings than speed, and if you are going to overclock and how high you think you will go, then buy accordingly.
Does this post sound too fatherly? Condescending? Patronizing? I hope not...apologies if it does... |

Looks like demophobe covered it pretty (actually, very) well. Unless you can truely take advantage of the higher bus speed of the corsair dominator ram, you may as well stick with the OCZ you have already. Both have the same stock timings (4-4-4-12) so no advantage there either. If you have tightened the timings on the OCZ, haven't maxed out the OC on the ram, and have reached your max OC on your cpu, no point upgrading just for the sake of sake.
I am kinda new around here, cubanlord, if you could give me a rundown of your rig and OCs on various components I would love to live vicariously through it. Post it here or shoot me a PM. Cheers. |

welcome to the board! Here it is:

Though, since then, I have upgraded to a zalman cooler and a new case:

and

***Regarding the cpu fan****
I bought the smaller version because the actually fatality one wouldn't fit in the slot (would bump into the PSU).
and, I sealed it with AS5. |

around these boards you'll find the following:
Demophobe & Giant & The Beaver = The most allround knowledgable.
Cubanlord = The freak that always wants to upgrade his sh!t (and knows a little about stuff here and there ) Mainly into video cards and cooling.
Superhero - The "latest news" guy of the board; always keeping up-to-date with what's going on in the PC world.
Wrench - The commenter (usually helpful advice)
GSX (the motorcycle dude) - new to the forum, like you, so we don't know much about him.
That's about it for regulars. Sorry if I missed anyone. |

Hey, thanks for the welcome! I just sold this rig to finance my new lappy before heading to Busan:
opteron 165 @2.6ghz/ arctic cooling freezer 64 pro
Asrock Dual sata II (conductive paint vdimm mod)
2x1 gig ocz performance pc4000 ram
ATi x1800xt @700core/775mem w. arctic cooling accelero2
80gb hdd/ 320gb hdd/ cd-dvdrw combo
fortron 400w psu
antec slk2600 case modded to fit 92mm panaflo fans front + rear
I almost didnt sell it, I almost put it in storage. Put so many hours into the various upgrades over the past 2 yrs, tweaking, overclocking, stability testing, and finally all the gaming, it was really hard to part with it. But realistically, by the time I return to canada, that thing will be a dinosaur (in my eyes, anyways) and will certainly not handle the games that will be out then either.
Nice rig that you built for yourself, should tide you over nicely until dx10/ vista upgrade. Too bad that intel bios is locked up so tight, I guess no overclocking for you.
Hope to find my own little niche here on this board, I can totally see myself building a rig in Korea. Cheers. |

That's what we like to hear! Somebody building a rig from scratch. Make sure you put your proposed parts on here so we can squabble about them! |

oops. Still, personally, would have gone with an asus/ gigabyte/ dfi board. I had nothing but trouble with an Intel board in my (really) old P4 rig, but I bet they have improved since then. |
