One thing to remember is that if you get a pet, you take that living creature as your ward for the next 8-20 years. You really have to keep that in mind. If you're cool with that, taking pets between countries is surprisingly easy. I have an endangered small cat (BorneoToki), who I have transported from Borneo to Jakarta (same country, but odd laws), and from Jakarta to Korea, and soon From Korea to St. Kitts. If you are cool with taking your animal everywhere for 2 decades, then yes, having a pet is amazingly cool and great for your stress levels.

we have a cat in our officetel. it's crowded. if you're alone, you might be able to get away with 2 cats, but you'll be changing the litter very often!

I agree with the others. You should adopt an adult dog. Training a puppy is almost impossible being gone 6-7 hours a day.

I used to be allergic to cats. But I seem to have outgrown it. Plus I wash my cat Gatsby every few months. It is the dried saliva that is the main allergy problem. Plus I brush him. Washing and brushing solves most of the shedding problem.
There are certainly wonderful adult cats that need homes. But it may be easier to train a kitten to travel, and to walk on a leash harness. With a kitten, say 6 to 8 weeks, it is fairly easy to train them to go on walks in a park or woods - they follow you like you were their mother.
I even took a ferral kitten to a public park with a busy path along the water, and the stray kitten was hopping up into the laps of strangers after two hours. When the kitten is taken away from home, you are its only friend, even if it was afraid of you at its home area. This probably won't work with a four-month old ferral cat, though. On the other hand, Gatsby was a fully grown ferral cat when I trapped him, and initially quite vicious, and he turned into a very affectionate cat who enjoys hiking, camping, walking on a leash and traveling in a car. He is very intelligent and learns quickly. |

I used to have a cat when I was young, and after she died I became allergic. The allergy lasted up until last year when I got a cat again. So I figured it out: I'm allergic to cats that aren't mine.
