I am looking into a one year deal in Daegu. I was just wondering if anyone had any expereinces good or bad from Daegu? I was also wondering what Daegu has to offer when your not working? Is there a pretty good collection of foreigners here?
Thanks,

They've been granted an expansion K-League (football, aka soccer) club for this season.
And I believe they have a KBL (b-ball) club...
And it's close to Ulsan, and fairly close to Busan and Pohang... |

Daegu is great!. I lived there for 1 and 1/2 years. Hopefully going back soon. Daegu has good shopping. Even for western food - you do have to look around a bit. Many great western resturants. Quite a few night spots like clubs and bars that cater to foreigners. Easy to get around - busses - taxis. A few interesting sites in city like mountains and amusment parks. Close to Army bases so AFKN tv is available. Some so-so book stores.
Daegu is great. Seoul still has it beat in some areas like resturants and shopping.

On the bright side, Daegu is dull, smells utterly awful, and hot as hell in the summer. My favorite thing about living here is that you save a ton of money, as there's really nowhere to spend a lot of it in town. Mind you, I love Seoul and Busan. Daegu reminds me of Omaha. |

yeah....Daegu is a little stiff at first...but it'll grow on ya. It's big enough to support all your commercial needs, yet it's small enough to give you a more relaxed pace of life....compared to Seoul or Busan that is. If you really value a more cosmopolitan scene, then Daegu can't help you. There is no chance of any foreign entertainment seeding it's way into the Apple Capital.
Daegu is touted as the fashion and fruit capital of Korea...not the entertainment capital. However, there are a great and numerous bunch of foreigners here and we are almost ready to open our own foreigner owned night club. Yes...it's true...a totally 'un'korean style joint.....I can't wait. There have been many changes taking place since I arrived 2 years ago. Its becoming more foreigner friendly and more diverse.
Most importantly, if you like eating pig intestine, you'll love Daegu! Mmm!

it is going to be called DV8. if everything goes accordng to plan, it will be a real western restaurant by day, and a techno club by night. it will be located on .rodeo street. near .rock and roll.. i have been in canada for a while but the guys tell me that it should be ready before march.
there is also a really cool new place that openned up... iam trying to get people to go there instead of that crap hole .gypsyrock. its called .bubble bar. it is just down the street from .gypsyrock. on the same side of the street, just past .denver stage.. its has imported beers, and cheap vodka orange for 3000won. the dj is really cool and the place looks great...its got the whole rough concrete and steel look.
see ya there when i get back.

i have a friend in daegu so i take the motorbike there from chonan sometimes
-it's only an hour from kyongju, the old silla capitol, and the coast. you can go up/down the coast. snorkling, diving. not far from ulsan (an hour south of kyongju)
-a middle school student said 'it's the hottest city in korea'. because, he said, it is surrounded by mountains which act like the walls of a 'hotbox'
-the korean women are very beautiful because they eat a lot of the tons of apples that grow around there
-it's a big, provincial city (about two million, right?)
-spread out, with parks around the river. there are fountains and gardens. the mountains around town look great. andong, korea's old style culture city/town, is ninety minutes north. andong is the one place queen elizabeth visited when she came to korea.
-downtown has pedestrian streets which bustle and look like myong dong in seoul. meet lots of foreign teachers there, and friendly korean women
-i heard that lots of people lost their jobs due to the recession and nearby ulsan is better for hagwon owners. more stable industry-based local economy in ulsan. in comparison, daegu is a sprawling provincial capitol not nearly pulling its own weight so well (these are tough times). |

that's just the local legend, so don't start 'deffing' pits just yet. besides, with a nose like that you look like a born leader. the nasally challenged are simply jealous, and lacking/your lackeys. set the fashion, rudder face, and look down your nose at them. |

Does anyone have some friends living in Youngcheon? I just moved here last week. Just wondering if there was a bar where the foreigners hang.
Send me a PM if you have any info. |
