BERLIN (AP) U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Thursday that the United States, European and Russian diplomats have a common goal of encouraging Iran back to the bargaining table over its disputed nuclear program.
"We reconfirmed we will use available channels and the Security Council to try to achieve that goal," the top U.S. diplomat said. Rice spoke following a breakfast meeting with her counterparts from Germany, Russia and the European Union.
The group reviewed Iran's compliance with a U.N. Security Council demand that it stop enriching uranium, a key step toward producing either nuclear power or a nuclear weapon.
The U.N. nuclear watchdog finalized a report that is to be released Thursday and is expected to formally confirm the Islamic republic's refusal to freeze enrichment.
Officials at the International Atomic Energy Agency said the report by Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the Vienna-based agency would say that Iran has expanded enrichment efforts instead of freezing them.

[Iran needs to allow inspectors in, be given some time, but not unlimited time before full sanctions fall on the country. The Gulf states who are upset with Iran could pump extra oil. However, Iran should be given a chance before people go down that path that has bad consequences for all sides.] |

| how many chances should they be given? I believe theyve been given a few already. Iran is deciding which path this is going down. While I was against the war in Iraq I would 100% support bombing Iran to smitherines. |

That is not a calm, sober approach. Shooting and then sorting things out leads to a big mess as we've seen. Ahmedinijad is trying to distract his disgruntled Iranian population, and they are getting angry with him. If the U.S. waits until putting the full force of sanctions, it would show the U.S. has truly exhausted diplomacy and has been sincere rather than cosmetic as was done in Iraq. The administration is not trying to repeat the same mistakes. The Europeans are losing their patience as well, and have pretty much lost it which works in the favour of the U.S. government. The Arab states are getting more alarmed with Iran and would be willing to back trouble makers in Iran and increase oil production when it comes to a war. I don't think there is a need to be hasty considering Iran is years away from a weapon, but Iran needs to be warned. Frankly, I expect there to be more internal pressure and dissent in Iran and going after Iran could make things worse in both Lebanon and Iraq. As someone who warned about what would happen in Iraq, I say wait before the full weight of punishment is felt for Iran. |
