I'm black(mom) & korean(dad), planning on going to Korea after graduation(in a year whoohoo) and I was wondering If anyone knows how mixed Koreans are viewed over there. Especially after the whole Hines Ward thing.
My best friends father is a politician over in Korea and when Hines Ward was all over the news he kept sending us letters and clippings about how Koreans are so great even if theyre mixed.

They don't really like any mixed people over here. But don't feel bad because koreans don't like anybody. The people in south seoul don't like people in north seoul, so it is a society of people who love to dislike. Before Hines Ward attitudes were a lot different, but due to koreans inferiority complex, he became a necessary champion in a country with no champions.
However, they don't hate mixed race people. They are curious if they meet you, but won't like their sons with you. |

They like mixed Koreans who have some skill, celebrity, or anything to offer that will allow them to boast.
Many mixed Koreans are treated like animals here. They're stared at and treated like 2nd class citizens.
Koreans are backwards and so immature when it comes to social issues. |

My daughter, 5, has had no problems living here nor attending kindergarten. I've also had friends with mixed kids through high school age who've reported little or no problems.
I know that there are kids who've had problems, but I've never met any so all I have to go on are the positive experiences of my kid and those of my friends. |

Yeah, I'm wondering if socio-economic status matters.
I'm guessing poor mixed people might have more troubles than if your parents are embassadors or something. |

It probably matters a lot in a place like Korea where social status is all-important. On top of it a child of an ambassador would be in a totally different environment than a child of a farmer: top notch schools for starters, the people around he child would also be more educated, and if not more accepting atleast they would be mindful of the parents' socio-economic status. |

You will not have a normal life here. Idiots on this board will say how great it is but they are wrong. What they are saying are only self-serving lies. It is hard...and they do not like black people. This is the truth. You will be stared at and pointed at, and talked about and children will say Gomdoongie (which means basically the worst word in English for black people).

I would have to echo a little of what "SuperHero" wrote. We've been here 7 years and my daughter (15 yrs old) has not experienced any problems. But, and here is the difference I think, she is mixed Caucasian/Korean. I have met an African-American/Korean couple. Their child experienced problems severe enough that they had to move out of our town after only a few months.
It seems to me that the "mix" determines how a person is treated. It seems that White/Korean mixed people are treated better than Black/Korean mixed people. However, both "mixes" can be, and often are, the targets of overt discrimination.
Just from my observation, many of those "mixed" people who are "famous" - using the Korean definition of the word - are employed in the entertainment industry. I have yet to see a mixed person in a position of responsibility in a major corporation or government entity. I'm not talking about a token foreigner, I am speaking of a Korean born mixed race person being hired and promoted up the chain to a position of responsibility. Heck, it was only recently that the government allowed mixed persons to serve in the military, if they want. The so-called "Pure" Korean males are drafted and have no choice. Prior to this, mixed race persons were not even allowed to serve in the military. The reason given, according to newspaper reports, was that mixed race people "wouldn't fit in."
A little long-winded. Take it for what it's worth. But ultimately, I would say "screw 'em." If want to come over, then do so. Enjoy yourself, don't let the narrow-minded, racists, and bigots define who you are. It's their loss, not yours.
