I was glancing over the Internation Job Board and was surprised to see postings for jobs in Memphis and New Orleans alongside ads for jobs in Thailand, Saudi Arabia and China.

The Memphis ad was understandable; they are looking for ESL teachers and world language teachers.

The New Orleans posting seemed a bit more desperate; they are looking for teachers. They add a note of idealism to the plea:

Quote:
The reconfiguration of the city s schools following Hurricane Katrina provides a historic opportunity to transform one of the nations lowest performing school systems. That transformation will not be possible, however, without a group of accomplished, goal-oriented teachers.

They will even consider professionals without teacher certification, though they must take classes to get certified after hiring.

They must still be having trouble. I looked into this a while back and the deadlline to apply was Feb. 12. I guess they didn't find them.

Two things turned me off: You had to fly in at your own expense for an interview, and if hired you had to move there at your own expense. And there was an essay that asked how you would make sure that no students in your class failed. Huh? I can think of a way, but it is not a good one.

I also was worried by the requirement that teachers actually live in New Orleans, given that there still seems to be a shortage of housing.

And then there are the reports of violent crime out of control. Combine this with students who almost certainly have fallen many grades behind in their work due to past problems with the school system.

Compare this to teaching conditions in South Korea and elsewhere in Asia. Is the United States becoming a third world country? Is the U.S. going to be left in the dust during the 21st Century? Should one consider teaching there as a sort of Peace Corps sacrifice? Or does this have the potential to be a truly rewarding experience, and a good place to live?

Can you imagine living in NO? Its one of the most crime ridden cities in the US, and if that isnt enough, who knows if it will even avoid getting flooded again. I would never live there. And I would never teach there

It's got the culture, baby!

Mardi Gras.

The French Quarter.

Bourbon Street.

The Marselises. Harry Connick, Jr.

Cajun culture.

Emerill! Crawfish boils.

The Sugar Bowl.

Cafe du Monde...mmm...warm beignets dusted with powdered sugar and coffee as strong as a man chopping down sugar cane on sultry summer afternoon!

It's not New Orleans. It's N'worlans, baby!

I don't know, maybe New Orleans isn't that desperate.

After all, they didn't post the help wanted notice on the Korean job board.
