Hi, I was just thinking about going over to Korea and starting my search for a job there - I figure it shouldnt take long.
The thing i was wondering is, will immigration let me in without a return ticket? I have a visa card, so if it came to the worst i could book a flight out again.
I would also have all the necessary documents with me, so that might help
Please help me on this |

I got in fine without a return ticket as well but I know of others who haven't. It seems to be based on the whim of whoever is checking you in. |

No probs. I think the problems stem from the travel agents - they're always the ones insisting that you need a return ticket - I think they are quite frankly just trying to make extra money with that excuse.
Yes, it's probably a good idea to be able to show financial backup just in case someone does query you at the airport. But no one I know of has ever been questioned about their purpose of entry into Korea. |

You should be fine when you come to Korea. Tell them you're traveling and DON'T TELL THEM YOUR LOOKING FOR TEACHING POSITIONS. Many teachers work in Korea without an E2 Visa and they'll probably hassle you if you tell them your looking for teaching positions. It would serve to your advantage to become familar with the main points of a contract and how to negotiate them before coming to South Korea. Do your research. Become familiar with Korean Labor Laws before you come. Some of the points you may want to look into before you come to Korea are:
Working hours
Wages
Overtime
Severance Pay
Income tax deductions
Medical (National Healthcare Insurance Plan)
Korean Pension Plan
Alien Registration Card
Housing
Paid Sick Days
Vacation
Contract Termination

You will have no problems with immigration on arrival.
You MAY have problems when you try to board the plane where ever you are coming from.
Immiigration rules state that you MUST have onward or return passage to qualify for the visa waiver stamp (entry without a visa).
Airlines face large fines and the cost of returning you if they are caught bringing you here and you do not qualify for entry.
About 1/2 of the people who try to board an aircraft without meeting the requirements are turned away or forced to purchase a ticket before they are allowed on the plane. It happens most often from North American departure points. (LAX, YVR, YYZ, SFO, ATL and ORD usually cause the most problems).

I have a similar situation, except that I've already found a job. For whatever reason (I guess it is faster) my employer is flying me over and then sending me to Japan for the visa in 5 days. Should I explain this situation to immigration when I arrive? Or should I lie to them and say I'm just on vacation? I've already worked in Korea for a year on an E-2, so it should be obvious I'm coming to teach. I have an itinerary (which I printed out) with a travel agent to Japan, but it's not the actual flight I'll be taking. Do you think I will have any problems on either side? I'm American, by the way. |

i have been asked for my outward ticket 2 times out of 4 coming into korea on no work visa.....if you have an E2 already then you won't have a problem at all
So 50% of the time i have been asked for my return portion of the journey and both times i have had a fully-refundable ticket out as my back-up..
Where you will have problems is at the check-in desk at your country of origin as it is against the law for airlines to let you board if you don't have an outward ticket. they could be fined if you get caught out...
once you are on the plane then you won't be asked again as here in korea they will have assumed that the airline has already checked it out...
i'll state again though, if you ALREADY have your e2 visa in your passport there won't be a problem... |
