Hello folks!
I'm a Korea and a teaching novice and though I come from industry (I worked in a factory doing 12 hours shifts) I didn't shudder at the thought of working 6 hours a day starting 1-3pm. Sounds allright I thought but from what I have read on some threads that somedays you don't even work the 6 hours! Is this true?
Maybe you have to be in for 6 hours to do lesson plans and whatnot. But how much actual teaching does the average Daves ESL teacher do? Give it to me straight! I can take it! |

3 X 45 minute classes a day, 3 or 4 extra 45 minute classes a day (I volunteer and get paid extra for them), but I am in the office (at school) for 40 hours a week.
OOPS edit. 3 or 4 extra 45 minute classes a WEEK...

With hagwons it varies according to how many students, how many native English teachers, etc. At my first hagwon, I usually worked from 10 am till 6pm and had around eight classes a day (including kindergarden...)
Another hagwon I was at had few students so I only had a couple classes a day. I spent a lot a time drawing pictures and playing basketball (I set up a hoop...) bowling, and card games with whatever students were hanging around...
In public school (I'm at a high school) I usually have to show up by 8:30 in the morning and am expected to stay till around 5pm. I think I have 20 classes a week, spaced out over five days. Sometimes I teach evening classes (elementary or adults) for overtime.
During exam periods (lasting up to a week a couple times a year...) I don't have any classes, and I usually just sit in my teachers office posting stuff here till they let me go - usually by noon or 1pm.
During summer and winter periods (when most students are on vacation) I usually have to come in for just half days till noon. At the present time, I haven't had any classes to teach since Christmas, and classes resume next Monday (March 5...) |

I work in a hagwon, and I teach 27 hours a week, but I am actually at the school about 35 hours a week. That's probably a little more than average, but I work at a school that actually cares about me and the students. I'd rather work a little more at a good school than less at a school were I was afraid of getting fired 11 months in. |
