There are lots of creepy, boring, and absolute a$$shole taxi drivers here in Korea, but how many of you have stumbled across some cool ones by chance?

Yesterday some dude picked me up from E-Mart and actually spoke English at a conversational (yet rudimentary) level. He told me that all Korean music was "garbage" and that he loved Metallica, Megadeath, Pantera, and even Slayer. The guy was 48 years old too, and wouldn't stop talking about the time Metallica came and played here a few years ago. Oh, and he was cranking Metallica's Black Album for half the ride home.

Probably the coolest Korean guy I've met so far. Cool Korean guys seem pretty rare, at least from my limited experience living here.

From what you're saying, a "cool Korean guy" must be one who speaks good English and likes Western music.

Come on guys...if this is what we're upto, there's something wrong. While I agree that Korean music isn't upto much in my opinion, learning Korean wouldn't go amiss.

This thread was started with the best of intentions, but butlerian's right.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't class a 48(ish) year old Korean guy who liked Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer as being cool...?

I've found that with basic Korean skills on my part, the percentage of cool Korean taxi drivers increases noticably.

99% of the taxi divers I've had are cool. The only bad ones have been from Kimpo airport.

I remember one guy who had his taxi all decked out in neon and played really upbeat music. We all had a really good time in his cab.

But yeah, I really prefer the guys who don't don't talk to me, I just wanna relax.....

That sounds like a cool taxi driver. I wonder if he's ever heard any of the Korean metal bands. These days Vassline could kick the ass out of Metallica with one hand.

Once met a Korean taxi driver on Yongsan who could tell you things YOU didn't know about your own state and CITY. He was even on AFKN a few times. I told him I was born in Butte, Montana and he went on and on about it...the mines, the population, the founding, a bit of history....I was stunned and he got a bit tip. Now THAT was cool.
