I drink a gallon of water a day with no problems. Can't vouch for barely tea, though.

As long as you don't chug it all at once. I think the key is your kidneys can only process so much water in a given period of time.

8 glasses of water a day is mumbo jumbo. No research has ever been done on it (disclaimer: no research I could find had ever been done on it when I checked this out a few years back). It's one of the examples I use for an example of lack of critical thinking.

You're absolutely right. The "8 glasses a day" credo is an urban myth. I read an article last year by a doctor who did just what the Beaver said. He wondered where the 8 glasses a day science was, so he went back 30 years in scientific research, and you guessed it, nada. No scientific study has ever been done that shows the validity of needing 8 glasses a day.

The doctor in question noted that the body is extremelly adapted to keeping a perfect balance of water in the body.

What was funny was he said that if you look at all the people who are walking around drinking water all day, which is a common sight in the Western Countries nowadays, the one thing you'll see is people constantly needing to go to the bathroom!

It's tough to sit through a movie but staying hydrated is worth it. Most people spend their entire lives slightly dehydrated which causes and/or exacerbates a myriad of health problems. There's no excuse for that when you live somewhere with plenty of fresh drinking water.

The color of your urine is a good indicator. If you're not getting enough water, it'll be quite dark. But, beer will give you clear urine too...

I've also notived that the quality of my voice is a good indicator.

Any other good indicators you know of?

Do you have an scientific evidence most people are slightly dehydrated and this causes/exacerbates health problems?

I didn't read any of the posts on this thread yet, but if I drank that much water, I'd be pIssin' all day and all night.

Some people need more water than others. If you drink coffee, juice, soda, etc. then that counts as part of your water intake. And food, too.

Fresh, unadulterated food, which most of us don't get enough of. Not coffee or soda. Those are poisons, and we need to drink more water to flush them out.

Really, I don't think it's news that eight glasses of water aren't necessary if you eat properly. The reality is that most people don't.

I ran into a fellow who claimed to have lost something like 100 to 200 pounds drinking something like 8 ounces of aloe juice a day and a gallon or two of water -- I don't remember the details now. And he said he could eat all the ice cream and food he wanted while doing this. He showed me his arm, which had the skin flaps left from when he was overweight.

Sounds like a great plan.

At any rate, if you want to flush "bad stuff" out, what I use is aloe juice.

I disagree with this. I think plain water would be just as good ... and obviously, a healthy diet with more fresh fruit and vegetables. If dried aloe makes you sick, I don't see how the fresh stuff could be necessary or help anyone flush out bad stuff.

Berkeley Wellness Letter, but if you want a specific issue, I can't cite it. Dehydration causes fatigue, headaches, constipation, irritability, and can exacerbate asthma. Try Googling it if you want to find out more; I found this Mayo Clinic article which states the usual advice, like don't wait until you're thirsty to drink, etc.:

I'm not 100% sure, but I think clear urine occurs when it's in your body for a short time. The longer you hold off urniating, the yellower the urine gets.

Doesn't infrequent urination lead to kidney stones?

Unless you are a Doctor or have done some serious study on the issue, nobody here knows what they are talking about. Relating one random article, or 10 that you found by typing "8 cups of water a day myth" into google hardly qualifies as "scientific proof."
Our body is composed of billions of different cells who have been evolving for 4 billion years with varying degrees of water surpluses and shortages. I trust they can figure out what to do with a little extra. drinking too much water is about the least harmful thing you will ever do to yourself.
As for the lady from the radio station, it wasn't the excess water that killed her, it was the shortage of brain.
She can't be held up as proof of this "water conspiracy"
