Nate On Unseats MSN Messenger
Korea's homegrown Nate On has unseated MSN Messenger as the country's No. 1 chat program, it was announced Wednesday. According to a survey conducted during the third week of March by the Korean online research firm Korean Click, 7.19 million respondents said they used Nate On, marginally more than the 7.04 million who said they use MSN Messenger.

I don't allow that program to be loaded on my lab computer at school (a computer which is shared with the newspaper students).
It's full of horrible, awful spyware, adware, etc. Add that and the Korean game sites (like the one that has Go-Stop) and it's really horrible. We had to totally reinstall windows to clean all of the crap off. I had to threaten the girls with total loss of all computers in my lab if they ever loaded any of that junk on there again.
My co-worker has to click through four messages that pop up with buddy-buddy and some other chat program every time he starts up. |

Yeah,
I loaded up Ad-Spider (still suspicious about that software) on one of the computers at school that students use and it found over 300 instances of spyware. |

I dont believe it!
seems like a marketing core to gain more users to MSN..
I have never met anyone who users NATE ON..
especially for chatting.. we all use it for sending free text messages..
but not chatting..
everyone I know uses MSN.. of course I dont know 7 million people..
but I dont think they have interviewed 15 million people to get this figure!
probably something like 1000 people and they just assume its 7 million
hahahaha |

Actually, I always see my students on Buddy Buddy or MSN.
I have a feeling NateOn had some advertising campaign and signed up a lot of users as a part of some discount deal or something, and now are claiming all of these people use it.
It's bogus. |

Anyone who loads up some Korean software needs their heads examined. It's all garbage, riddled with spyware and rife with adware and worse.
There is no such thing as "invasion of privacy" in this country....and this stretches over a number of areas in life here. |

I believe it.. most of the Koreans I know primarily use Nate now (students included).. some just log on to MSN now to talk to me now and then, but most of their friends have switched to Nate... |

My wife installed it on my computer a few months ago. It didn't take long for me to get rid of it. |

Most of my students use NateOn or SayClub. Many have MSN accounts, but hardly anyone uses it, students only use it to chat with English speakers. And no, there isn't much english help for NateOn.
I think NateOn is pretty good, especially the SMS function. However, you will need to borrow a Korean's registration number to use the SMS function. You can recieve and send SMS messages connected to your phone number. If your Korean is any good, you can go through the Options and deselect any unwanted features. |

NateOn unseats MSN Messenger in its own country of just a few dozen million.
Usage outside of this tiny peninsula -- almost nil.
Not as impressive as it would seem. |
