If we lived in Trinidad, we would be debating between trinin-blacks and trinin-east indians. The blacks would argue that they they are superior because of their size and strength and more so, becasue of their willingness to adapt and embrace British culture first. Whereas the East Indians would argue that they are intellectually and morally superior and they managed to maintain their original culture and heritage. Lastly, the whites would argue that they are superior because of their wealth and social status in postcolonial Trinidad.
So what is the point of this debate? Its obvious that the poster feels superior to East Asians and he is insulted because they think otherwise. So what do you want? Conformation? |

A few of my Korean friends have told me that they are glad China is becoming more economically powerful because for so long now a lot of Asians have thought that they weren't 'as good' as Westerners, one even said that a lot of Asians have believed that their 'blood was just not as good as westerners...'
Doubt that was the case before The Brits enslaved India, held China to Ransom, stole Hong Kong and Singapore, other Europeans nations colonised then 'Indo China' as it was known and all the American wars in Asia that followed....
Westerners haven't excactly been great neighbours... Before that I know that up until then most North East Asians believed China was the most advanced nation on the planet and that other countries races were barbarians...
Just like the Greeks, the Romans, the Egyptians, the French... etc...
We're all human, all guilty as nations of a lot of the same crimes etc... |

"Skinhead" isn't a real skinhead. The numbers of racists in the US is increasing because they are in a state of war, but the non-racist skinheads will stop them from ever becoming a problem. |
Y'know, you're right, brother. We are different. When I fail at something, I usually give up. But not you. You keep pushing that 'real skinhead' agenda up that hill as long as your little heart desires. You'll always be the only one here who cares. March on, brother! Fight the good fight! Real skinheads rule! Down with the pretenders! hahaha. Great post. |

It was intended as a discussion, not a debate. While your anecdote is very interesting, your conclusion is off the mark. I'm not insecure to the point that I need to validate my own bigotry, as you infer. Indeed, my wife is East Asian and I admire much in these cultures.
So stick to the question, or ignore it.

Wherever did you get the impression that Koreans and Japanese once paid homage to the longetivity and diversity of Chinese culture? Do tell. |

Just to play devil's advocate one could turn all those statements around on you.
Intellect: They do better at math and science, but lack common sense, creativity and critical thinking skills.
In terms of culture: the pre-date america, sure but they have stagnated and look to america for culture today.
In terms of society, they have more cohesion and family values or they are a closed/unaccepting society that is old fashoined.
My only point is that making statements and speculating on these kind of questions can bring all sorts of responses, none totally correct. |

When you consider what was in Seoul 50 years ago, a pile of rubble, they seem to have come a long way, very very quickly.

2) Pre-dates America? I'm sure the native Americans would disagree.

Native Americans are descendants of Asians who crossed a land bridge between the Bering Straight.

Only 5000 years ago? I don't think so. |

You can't turn them around on me, I'm just the messenger. This thread was about whether (and how!) East Asians believe they are superior to the West. I simply provided what seemed to me what they are thinking in a nutshell. I was not judging it right or wrong. Of course, saying they pre-date America culturally is myopic but to Koreans the West=America to a large part.
I don't want or need to argue against Koreans on this matter. And it's not like argument will convince them of the contrary. It's like arguing with children. No good can come of it except to make one feel more mature of somehow superior. Which I guess is the point for some how truly believe Koreans are inferior. I don't think along this axis either way. But then again I'm Canadian, and we tend not to think of ourselves as better or worse than any other people. We're unassuming in that way. |

To respond to my own thread:
I do believe that many, many East Asians believe they can easily dupe Westerners in trade matters big and small. The fact that most don't play by the same rules of engagement contributes to the likelihood that the latter can be deceived serving only to reinforce the perception. |

Yes,they often believe that matters of interpretation are up to them and that they have "Korea" on their side.
Westerners here are more aware these days of their options-eg labour and pension offices.Koreans don't know people know of these so it becomes a shock to them, but still an unecessary drawn out process getting what was originally agreed to.
Signing your name on a contract to most people is BINDING.It's your name.If you don't stick to it,then what does your name mean??
Koreans have long since had this reputation.
It can be amazing though how they'll justify things by saying "This is Korean style"-how I hate that phrase...does any other country use it so damn much??Combine that with the E2 visa where you're effectively endentured to an employer for a year and it's a headache in the making.
I just instantly dismiss Korean efforts to say they're superior,or even more interesting when I think of the food they eat,the cramped conditions they live in,the spitting, the crap school system et al.
They don't even know of their own history that much. With the first Korean History Proficiency Test, less than half passed at High School level, about one third passed at Middle School level.
This should have prompted crisis calls. The solution?Make the test easier so more pass next year.Problem solved.Fvck me
On the other hand,it's generally safer in East Asia, there's less of a drug problem and the girls are alright. They're ahead on that. |
