I'm writing this to inform all that the chap who posted as "Mody Ba" has passed away. His real name was Bruce Nix. I'm posting this on "Job-related Discussion" because this was where he usually posted when he discussed Korea. On the General "Job Discussion Forum" he posted as "bnix". His better posts are to be found there, IMHO. I only knew him for a year but became fond of his sarcasm, acid wit and his willingness to tell it like it was. He was bit of an old un(like some of us) and was undeniably irascible, agreeably cranky(when it was merited) and a tad judgmental. He was an old pro who was fully qualified for ESL/EFL and had taught in Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Poland and the Czech Rep. as well as Korea. I'll miss him & his posts. EPIK has lost a "fighter". -Mosley

That is sad. He had a cranky but pragmatic way about him. My condolences.

Thats a jolt. Here stirring things up on daves cafe one day, gone the next.

I never met the man but we had a fair number of exchanges on this forum. Our opinions often clashed but I had the idea if I met him in person I'd find a genuine & interesting man. I'm reminded again theres a full real human behind every cyber persona.

Peace to you, Bruce.

All the EPIK office and the POE he was posted to would tell me was that he died in his sleep between Aug.25-29(yes, in Korea-in 2 weeks he was supposed to start at a new post in Jeju). The U.S. Embassy held the funeral for him. I believe he was 57. While he was hardly Charles Atlas, I never knew he had any health problems.

That's REALLY sad Crying or Very sad

57 is way to young. I take it that he had no family if the embassy held his funeral. That makes it even sadder!!!

RIP

Bruce Nix is an EPIK colleague of mine of old, of the same intake group and same province as me a few years back. The last few months I've been reading Mody Ba's posts and I had no idea it was him. I'm in tears.

He helped communicate to the provincial office for our group, diplomatically but firmly, those years ago, that we would not accept home stays. He helped carry the day. I remember it pretty clearly. A quiet man with integrity and principles.

Although I never knew him, I remember reading his posts.

Death is inevitable and always sad-- passing in one's sleep is about the gentlest way to go....good karma

He'd probably enjoy looking down from Teacher Heaven on a big Soju wake in his honour.
