By the eloquent wisdom of Tocqueville:
"It would seem that if despotism were to be established among the democratic nations of our days, it might assume a different character; it would be more extensive and more mild; it would degrade men without tormenting them. I do not question that, in an age of instruction and equality like our own, sovereigns might more easily succeed in collecting all political power into their own hands and might interfere more habitually and decidedly with the circle of private interests than any sovereign of antiquity could ever do. But this same principle of equality which facilitates despotism tempers its rigor. We have seen how the customs of society become more humane and gentle in proportion as men become more equal and alike. When no member of the community has much power or much wealth, tyranny is, as it were, without opportunities and a field of action. As all fortunes are scanty, the passions of men are naturally circumscribed, their imagination limited, their pleasures simple. This universal moderation moderates the sovereign himself and checks within certain limits the inordinate stretch of his desires."
This one statement has helped me shape my political wisdom....

Levels of Consciousness
Stupidity;
Naivete + Ignorance;
Sophmoric;
Experience + Contemplation;
Understanding;
Knowledge;
Wisdom;
Tao
These are parallel planes. Those below you cannot really hurt you. Those above would not try even if they could. |

Rather like one I put on another thread:
| Quote: |
| Good judgement comes from experience; experience comes from bad judgement |
Another good quote:
| Quote: |
| People who say something can't be done are usually interrupted by those doing it |
Similarly,
| Quote: |
| While the difficult takes time, the impossible just takes a little longer |

"Most people are stupid."
Acknowledging this truth continually helps me from becoming frustrated or enraged by the stupidity I see all around me. I say this to myself, lower my expectations, and am pleasantly surprised when someone does something intelligent or kind.
Aside from this, the golden rule works splendidly, methinks. |

Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.
In other words, no one is out to get you - they really are just that dumb.

Just to be contrary, I have to say I dislike this kind of thinking. It sounds arrogant to me. Many people think they are clever or somehow smarter than others, and often think along these lines. "The masses are asses," some guy said to me long ago. I never forgot it. Now I think he and I and you, the reader, are also part of the masses.
If most people are stupid, how is it that we live in the world we now do? Did all this amazing stuff that surrounds us come from just a few people, or was it the effort of millions, societies, influence, that brought it about. Perhaps a few people are truly remarkable, brilliant, whatever, but they exist in a larger context. If most people are stupid, they are needed to contrast the few who stand out. Congratulations on being part of the elite. |
