I find myself in the market for suggestions for decorating my walls with that 'traditional' Korean paper found in Insa-dong.
I bought two sheets (maybe 2' X 4') of yellow paper with the dried leaves inside. Taped one sheet to the wall then overlapped the top right corner with the lower left corner with the other sheet. Looks OK. But having trouble keeping it on the wall. 6 or 7 pieces of scotch tape isn't doing the trick. Suggestions welcome.
Second issue: My computer room has two bare walls. The carpet covering the wretched yellow linoleum floor is purple, gold and green. I thought the walls were white till I got the crap covering the windows off and the sunlight came in. Now I think they are a very pale green.
Should I get more paper and do something in here (if so, what exactly) or should I wait for spring and get several of those reed mat thingies they hang over doors and cover a wall with those? |

Hey
I also am doing some decorating. As for the scotch tape issue, I understand! This year I bought some of those 3M hooks that came with the special adhesive strips. I have been using the spare ones to hang things, available at anything stationary store.
To add abit of color I am buying heaps of plants that you can purchase cheap from the subway stations at the moment. I think those bamboo shoots look funky.
You could use some of the paper from Insa-dong and make latterns or do some of your own water paintings.
I have collected quite a few things from places along my travels and stuck them on my walls. I have also made a photo wall with a difference. I got some baby wooden pegs and pegged the photos on different angles on the wall. Anyway thats just some thoughts.

Great ideas guys! Not sure how to get around the tape problem though Ya-ta... haven't seen any 'Blu-tak' in the stationery stores either...
I brightened up my walls cheaply with fabric. Bought 8 metres of gorgeous cotton fabric with an oriental peony print at a market. Simply cut them in 3 and then had them hemmed by a local adjumma. They are now hanging with several clear pins stuck into the wooden cornices bordering the ceiling.
Also had a table runner and cushion covers made for my bed and 'street chair'... really feels cozy now. Only cost 12,000 won for all the above sewing (including zips in the cushion covers). |

Ya-ya boy, you could try buying a cheap glue gun from the local hardware store or using some of that foam double sided tape. The tape is amazingly sticky stuff and don't buy the scotch tape style double sided tape. Doesn't work as well. |

Down the street from Gecko's in Itaewon you can find a hole-in-the-wall stationary store that usually carries Blu-tak.
You could also paint the walls. Get a big can of water-based white paint and some different colored inks and make up some cool colors. (Just paint over your existing wallpaper) You could even stick your Insa-dong paper onto the wet paint.
Very cheap and easy to do....
...just like me! |

ya-ta, double sided tape is what you want. I used the kind with a bit of foam inbetween to hang all sorts of art and things on the walls over there. A roll is about 3,000W and widely available |

What about combining the reed mat idea and the paper? You could hang the mats and fix the paper to the mats quite easily. Might be too much though. |

Thanks for the double-sided tape idea. That sounds like a winner.
I'm attracted to the 'make your own color' paint idea, but it would be more work than I'm willing to do. Also, I doubt my ability to get the colors right.
There's a boring light on the balcony and that lantern idea might just be the thing to perk up that space. Buddha's birthday is coming up and maybe I can snag a lantern off the street.
I did see a huge role of red and black wall paper at Kim's Club that would look terrific if I could buy enough for just one strip...a whole room would look too much like a wh*r* house, but I'm sorely tempted. Unfortunately, the role costs W40,000; too much for cutting one strip off and tossing the rest. Now if there were a group of people interested in wh*re-house red wall paper, maybe we could go in together. |
