The next time an adoshi or student tells me that Koreans are really genius I'm going to snap. Actually, I'm writing up a list of sciences on a piece of paper. The list will include anthropology, biology, sociology, chemistry, surgical sciences, pyschology, astronomy, history (the scientific study of), political theory, paleontology, meteorology, genetics, aerology, neurology, etc
I've decided to let them choose any ONE of the one hundred or so scientific areas to write a brief essay on. If they can write an essay on any
-ANY!!!- area of the sciences that Koreans excelled at during their fabulous 5000 years I will concede that Koreans are genius. I will even take out an advert in the Korean Herald announcing to all and sundry that Einstein, Newton, Galileo etc indeed must have had some Korean blood. I will even concede that the Bible's reference to the "Chosen People" has been misunderstood all these centuries. It was really a reference to the Chosun People, and that the REv. Moon is correct. Koreans are not only the "Soul of Asia" but the light of the world and God's chosun vehicle for human redemption.
If they can't (which they can't) I will ask them their definition of "genius". I will also ask them which teacher informed them that Koreans "are genius". Once informed, I will give the student permission to get that teacher's help in writing said essay. If their combined efforts still amount to nothing I;ll politely inform them to stop annoying foreigners with such nonsense. And quit your friggin anti-American protests. For without Western technology Koreans "genius" would still have you in the stone age.
But who knows. Maybe Koreans made massive advances in mathematics are oceanology etc. and I'm just too unread to have heard about them.
Keeping my humble pie on hand; just in case King Sejong did indeed invent modern economic theory or astrophysics. |

He did apparently invent the sundial, and also a time machine to deliver the technology to the Greeks and other ancient civilizations so they could use it a few thousand years before he was born.
Thank god the time machine followed "Back to the Future" rules so he was able to go back and forth, as opposed to "Terminator" rules which only allows one-way travel, or "Timerider" rules, which are just plain silly. |

i think you're taking this way too emotionally.
i can be wrong but do you think perhaps koreans often make the mistake of using "genius" when they mean to say "ingenious"?
just a thought.
i know koreans can have a lot of national pride,
it likely helped them through the rough patches of their history when forces around them were basically putting a muddy boot in their face.
however, if you ask any korean clearly, i doubt they would insist korea is populated by 40+ million einsteins.
but i think they can be excused if they view themselves as a clever people who have been able to overcome goliath obstacles.
which affirms why i think they're probably meaning to say "ingenious",
alas their cleverness is not demonstrated when it comes to their command of foreign languages... |

Koreans aren't ingenious either. They simply copied Western technology. Without that western technology Korea would be a swamp. Korea is one big photcopy machine. In 5000 years it accomplished what? The adoshi?
At best Koreans are "capable". If Koreans said that to foreigners we'd have no problem. But saying to every foreigner they meet that Koreans are (in)genious is so outrageous as to spark contempt. Even if more accomplished races (British, French, etc.) made such statements we'd roll our eyes. But when adoshi says it of Koreans - who contributed NOTHING to the advancement of human knowledge in 5000 years - it's too absurd to go without a retort.
Ask adoshi how many noble prizes Koreans have won in any field of science? The answer, I'm afraid, is zero. There are more geniuses in one graduate school in the West than there have been in Korea in all of its 5000 glorious years.

Buddhist monks in Cheongju, Korea, invented the movable-metal-type printing press at least 100 years before Gutenberg got around to it. |

Koreans invented the first printing press? If truth be told, the Chinese invented the printing press in 868 AD. Koreans simply 'copied" it (as with so much that was invented elsewhere). They are capable at copying other peoples' achievements. Even making innovations on them. Unfortunately, actually "inventing" is not Korea's thing. Never has been. If it was, books that deal with the history of knowledge would make at least a passing rederence to Korea. They don't. Why? Simple rule of academia. "No contribution. No mention." Maybe if someone writes a book on copying stuff invented by others Korea will receive honourary mention. Until then... |

Yeah, it was definitely China that invented it. What Korea did was just use metal. It's kind of like comparing normal tv's to flat screen tv's. |
