I think I put my eggs in the pot of cold water and from the time I turn on the heat to when it's turned off is 8 mins. It seems to work for me - getting medium (not hard dry) egg yolks.
As for shells cracking - that also happens, but no big deal to me. Isn't it that you can put a little vinegar to prevent that? |

You can buy pre-cooked boiled eggs as well. Found this out when I bought half a dozen to boil at home....

| For me the trick is keeping them at room temperature first. I'll leave them out of the fridge for about 30 minutes before I put them in water. That's stopped them from cracking, at least for me. Then I put them in water, bring the water to a boil, and once it starts boiling I'll turn the heat to low and let them sit like that for about 12 minutes. After I take them out of the water, I'll run them under the cold water and let them cool off before eating. |

| Maybe try adding salt to the water so that it boils hotter... |

When you add salt to water it raises the boiling point, but not enough to make a difference when cooking.

At this point, every reader who has ever paid the slightest attention in chemistry class will object. "But adding salt to the water raises its boiling point, so the water will boil hotter and cook the food faster."
To these readers I award an A in chemistry but a D in Food 101. It's true that dissolving saltor really anything else, for that matter (I'll explain)in water will indeed make it boil at a higher temperature than 212F at sea level. But in cooking, the rise is nowhere near enough to make any difference, unless you throw in so much salt that you could use the water to melt ice on your driveway. |

Three steps to a perfect egg:
1. As mentioned, use room temp. eggs.
2. Also as mentioned (but not for the reason stated), throw some salt in the water.
3. DON'T BOIL YOUR EGGS. This is really the most important. The water needs to be brought to a boil, but then it should be immediately removed from the heat. Otherwise you end up with a rubber white and a green yolk.

I have no problems with boiled eggs.
I boil water, I throw in salt, the water stops boiling. After awhile, the water boils again. I put in eggs, take out in a few minutes and they're perfect.
Why not try it? Salt is cheap. |

Never-fail hardboiled eggs:
Put eggs (cold is fine) in a pot of cold water & turn on the gas.
Roll them around a couple times as the water starts to heat so the yolks get centered.
As soon as the water boils, turn off the gas & cover the pot with a lid.
Wait 20 minutes. |
