Anyone here ever been to Nagoya?
I never really got to know this city but passed through it a few times. Frankly, it struck me as very bland and as a boring place to perhaps live. However, it's only an hour or so from Tokyo or Osaka, which is good.
Anyone know more about the city, i.e., night life, restaurants, schools, outdoor activities, etc.? |

Lived just south of the city for 6 years. It is bland and boring exactly as you describe. Best thing about living in that area of Japan is being an hour's drive from some awesome Central Alps scenery. There is a small expat scene but it is way smaller than Seoul and predominantly US in origin although these may well suit you
If you're into F1, Suzuka is pretty close too. |

I spent a few days there once, pretty unremarkable....
They had an expo there a while back so hotels are numerous and cheap (by Japanese standards) also probably due to the expo I found the level of English there to be higher than other places in Japan.
If I had a good job I'd live there as Kyoto and Osaka are pretty accessable if you've got the cash for the fast train. Oh the airport is nice. |

There is a very active nightlife area between Nagoya Station and Seike (sp?)...and the center part, has an interesting 'Central Park' area.
Nagoya, while not Osaka or Tokyo...looked very liveable (compared to the other areas of Japan anyways)...nothing beats Osaka or Tokyo...but Nagoya looked MUCH better than most of the other cities I've been traveling through in Japan this Summer.
Honestly, I was just there on Monday (a few days ago), and I can honestly say I really liked it a lot, although I wouldn't recommend anyone to go there as a tourist (much like I wouldn't recommand someone to go to Korea as a tourist)...but I still liked Nagoya quite a bit. |
