| I don't have my ARC yet. What do I need to open a bank account (at KB)? How about a Costco membership? |

| I think that you do require your ARC to open a bank accont, and likely an initial deposit of some type. Costco, I dunno. |

I think for Costco you need your ARC. The first time I tried to sign up, I'd accidentally left mine at home and they wouldn't let me join. It's gonna be the same deal with a bank membership.
It's a bit strange, this requirement, because, while it makes sense on the face of it, the requirement fails to acknowledge the fact that your ARC changes every year. Or maybe you just get a new card with the same number? I'm not sure about that, now..
Btw, Ella, why don't you have your ARC yet? Do you know how to do it? |

For the bank you will just need your passport BUT...
If you use it as your ID to open your account it will be the only ID they accept for anything else you want to do.
If you use your ARC then you will only need your passport for foreign currency transactions.
You will need your ARC or a Costco card from home to get a Korean Costco card. |

For Costco, Pretty much all the info you need can be found on the application form:
http://www.costco.co.kr/eng/images/goldstar.pdf
They will also likely want a shot of you(they take it there...at least they do in Daegu) for the card. |

| 35,000 for Costco card. Bring your ARC. Its really easy. Its worth the 35,000. Buy the time I buy lotion at a third of the price as Emart and Cheese at 1/4 of the price, I've already saved myself 35,000 |

You might consider buddying-up with a friend who lives near you and who also wants to join. This would also make sense if it's a major trek to get there, if money's tight, and if you think you'll only make a handful of expeditions to Costco per year.
What you do is, apply for just one membership (one card, one fee, one photo) and the two of you arrange to visit together, because one card-carrying member can bring in one or two guests with them. Also, the photos on the cards are fairly crude & low-res, so if the two of you are both foreigners, they most likely won't notice if you borrow his card/he borrows yours for solo missions.

I feel like a newb asking this, but what do you mean? I've had the same card for, like, centuries. |

Yesterday, in an early-morning fog, I went to an ATM and withdrew money for the week from my bank account stateside. Still seeing double from the fact that it was so early, I read the numbers as 50 (1,000w) when it actually read 50 (10,000w). So, intending to yank out 50,000w, I accidentally pulled out 500,000w. When it said "counting money" and I could hear the bills shuffling for so long, my heart skipped and I realized what I had just done. My home bank account is now about $260 overdrawn.
I've been here a week and a half - went to immigration on Monday for the ARC, so now they currently have my passport with them, which they will send back to me as soon as they issue and make the ARC. Now I can't get a bank account until the ARC is sent back to me, along with my passport. Without the bank account (I'll be getting it at a Citibank, which is right across the street from my school) and passport, I can't wire money back home to my overdrawn account until I get my ARC and passport back.
So, ALL THAT SAID, is there any other way to get cash into my account back home outside of mailing/overnighting it to my parents? |

Quick answer, until you get your passport back, NO, there is no other way. In fact, without your passport you cannot even exchange Korean won to another currency. |

The baggy-pants ajummas of Itaewon & Namdaemun never ask to see one.
Hell, just have a friend here in Korea wire a bit to your account. |

i've never used my passport for anything in korea, except to get my arc card. after that, i used my arc to open bank accounts, give blood, get a costco membership, and do countless other things. i have even wired money back home with my bank account (my bank has never seen my passport - only my ARC). |

| I've got a question: do costco memberships expire? You have to pay once a year, right? |
