Hey, everyone what's your opinion on what would be an appropriate salary for someone after finishing one year? What kind of vacation time?

I've heard that second year teachers get a big bump up in pay and benefits? Is this true?

Newbs should expect about 2.0-2.2, but after you finish your first year you should expect about 3.0-3.5 with 10 weeks of paid vacation.....seriously though, a lot of what you receive is up to you and how good of a negotiater you are. After my first year I got my boss to reduce my working hours, but in turn I lost my housing. I negotiated it that way, so I could get more free time in the evenings.

I think you should get at least 100,000-200,000/month more per month after you finish the 1st year. As far as vacation, I don't think hagwons really give more than 10 days/year. You might be able to get more, but it could be unpaid vacation. Ask for more, but expect to receive less.

If you are working at a hakwon try to negotiate a commission for the number of students in your class. That is what the good Korean teachers do and that is where the big money is. If you take a flat salary expect between 2 and 2.2 until the next disturbance in the teaching market. After the first year you might get a 100,000 won per month raise but you should not expect this every year. Regardless of how much vacation is in your contract, don't be surprised if they try to find ways to curtail it. Hakwons operate without the concept of a vacation if they can help it.

the OP missed vital information: how much do you want to work each wek? How much in the classroom and how much in ancillary duties? How much total?

You can make 4 million if you are decent and want to put in a true North America style 40-45 hour a week job.
