I cannot figure out the addresses for anything.
What is a dong? (no funny comments heh)
What is a gu/ku?
why is there like three different spellings of places like
yang chung gu
yang cheuon gu
yancheoun-ku
yangchung-gu
which is right?
Is shin-jong 2 dong the same place as mok dong? what is the zip code if there are any?
could anyone give me an example of how a proper address should look when my folks send packages?
Thanks a ton! |

Welcome to the joys of deciphering Asian addresses.
A 'dong' is the smallest local city government region. Think 'neighborhood' with some kind of local government authority.
A 'gu' is bigger. It is something like a borough in NYC. It is a subdivision of the whole city.
There are 3 (or more) spellings of the same place because Korea has had a series of transliterations, none of which anyone likes...or knows, or uses. The nationalists get involved and screw things up. Most of us who have been here a while have to see the Korean to know what the transliteration is trying to say. That should tell you something.
Your address:
Ask your employer to send you your address. Carefully copy it and give it to your parents. If they write it clearly in English, packages will arrive at your door with little problem (mail delivery people can read English with no problem). |
