Hi. I am doing this for a friend. i have a friend who teaches at a hogwan from hell. she teaches 176 classes a month and gets 2.4. she is overly stressed and sick of being a slave. she has been here 7 months. she is wanting to leave the hogwon on a midnite run and sign with another school for a year. My question is if she does leave her school can she ccome back to Korea and work without a letter of release from the hogwan from hell? Also does anybody know anything about getting a medical release from the school and what that involves?

any help is gratefully appreciated. u can e-mail me at my own e-mail account at [email protected]. i really want to help her out and avoid as much bs as posssible.

Thanks]

Is the school in breach of the contract?

What did she sign?

Of course she signed a contract. What does the contract say? If they are not in violation of the contract then I say screw your friend for being naive enough to sign that type of contract without checking out the contract and the school first.

Also, if you used to work for them and you knew they were getting worse, why would you recommend that job to your friend. Maybe it's becasue you were getting a bonus to do so? So you sold your friend out for a bonus and now you're asking for advice on how to double-screw your old boss and 'rescue' the friend you sold out in the first place?

Good luck.

Hi Jackass here,
Just want to advice you that had you put this in the job related forum you may find more people there to give you positive advice. Anyway Becky I'm sure this is an evil hagwon and nothing to do with any attitude problems.

Midnight runs are generally frowned upon around here as it makes life worse off for the teachers left behind who become less trusted.

If she runs away she will have to wait until her E@ expires to get a new one. If she is fired, much better she as long as her employer cancels her visa. Do I search check out the labor board. I'd be more helpful but pah!

Now Becky did you get your friend into this mess?

first of all 2 the guy that said i sold my friend out... i would never sell someone out. She came to the school and i met her in Korea. so don't jump to conclusions u loser. second, I don't understand why forgeiners are so unwilling to help each other out. what are u scared of the big bad Koreans! Pathetic. all I want is someone to tell me the honest truth. I don't want any of this bullshit of people acting like they are all high and mighty. we all know contracts mean nothing here. she signed your standard bullshit hogwan contract. Just somweone please tell me if she can work in korea again w/o her letter of release. thats it thats all. Its bullshit like I have encountered today is one reason why i never go on daves esl. just give me the truth and thats it

I recommend two things: you put this in the job related topic, and you sort your attitude out!! Because with such a wankee attitude you aint going to find anybody who will help you! I could give you your answer, but I will not due to the fact that you sound like a complete *beep*!!! Have a nice day jackoff, or what ever your name is!!!

Regards The Charge

Oh, and I wonder if you would be so offensive face to face...I would drop you like a bad habit if you were!!

If she wants out, she should probably try to give one month notice (or whatever is specified in the contract...) As far as I know, she wouldn't be able to get another job without a letter of release - at least until the contract period is up (July?...) But if she leaves without notice and the director wants to blacklist her she might have to wait considerably longer...

If she uses "medical condition" as a reason for not giving sufficient notice, and she tries to get another job right away (after getting a release letter...) it may - or may not - be noticed by immigration ...

From what is stated, she does have a very heavy workload (8 or 9 classes a day if it's a five-day week...) If I were in her position and was getting worn down (physically and mentally) I'd wait till I get paid and then inform the director that I was suffering from exhaustion and might not be able to teach so many classes for much longer...

I'd add that unless I got a lighter schedule (eg: 5 or 6 classes a day...) I'd have to leave by next month for the sake of my health...

I knew a Canadian woman teacher, though, who always complained of being sick on the job, but would regularly travel all over Korea on hiking and recreation trips with friends on weekends. The work-a-holic director really disliked her for that (but I think her asthma condition made it very difficult for her healthwise in Korea...)

Y'know, you're quick with the rudeness, but did you try to say thank you to those who have offered advice? (like Rteacher?) It makes hard to want to help your friend.

If you listen, people are saying that, if the hagwon is not violating the contract, then it's going to be hard to convince the Labor Board. If they are violating it, start there. I can't remember the number but people on the job section have said that the Labor Board has helped out. Read up on St. Andrew Hagwon in Ilsan for a horror story.

Now, if the hagwon isn't violating the contract, maybe your friend needs to start by standing up for herself. If she tries this, and still there is no change, then make plans to leave. I would still reccomend giving some sort of notice. At my first job, my coworker did that, and I still respect her for it.

Finally, drop the attitude and post over in the Job section, not off-topic. The Jobs section has those who want to help out.

Hey, hey, hey!!!!

I swear, some of you people have as much sense as a light switch. This board already has enough ESL armchair generals, and we don't need anymore.

The O.P. was not the one with an initial atittude..........

OH MY GOD! The O.P. accidentally posted on the wrong discussion board! What a crime!

O.P., your friend can leave anytime she wants. See, when teachers allow these things to happen, it makes it even more difficult for the next teacher. However, if she signed a contract that has alows those hours, well....................But, hell with it. If she wants to leave, then more power to her! That is way too many hours anyway, and don't listen to some of the arm chair generals here..........tell your friend to do what is best for her/him.

cheers!
