Canadian Boy, Parents Arrive In Toronto
After Texas Prison Stay
A nine-year-old Canadian boy and his Iranian parents arrived safely in Toronto on Wednesday night after being held for six weeks in a Texas detention centre.
"Thank you for everybody who helped us," Kevin Yourdkhani said, clutching his bags at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
Kevin and his parents, Majid Yourdkhani and Masomeh Alibegi, flew into the airport from Houston, landing in Toronto at about 5:45 p.m. ET. The couple had tears in their eyes after leaving the plane.
The family was allowed to come to Canada after Immigration and Citizenship Minister Diane Finley agreed to give them temporary residency permits two weeks ago. The permits arrived in Texas on Monday.
Finley said she granted the permits in the best interest of the boy. The family is now trying to claim refugee status.
Kevin's parents arrived in Canada 10 years ago seeking asylum, but were unsuccessful and deported to Iran in December 2005. Kevin was born when they lived in Canada.
The parents said they faced torture in Iran and made another attempt to seek refuge in Canada with the use of stolen Greek passports.
But on a flight to Toronto from Guyana on Feb. 4, a passenger suffered a heart attack and died, resulting in the plane being diverted to Puerto Rico.
U.S. officials discovered their false documents and detained them for five days before sending them to the T. Don Hutto detention centre near Austin, Texas. The converted medium-security prison has been condemned by human rights groups and is the subject of a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The family said living in the centre was awful.
"It was miserable condition they had over there," Majid Yourdkhani said, standing by his wife as he spoke to reporters at the Toronto airport.
"There are almost 200 children that live there in very bad conditions. Now most of the children there have chicken pox, eye infections, flu."
His wife said the family is relieved to be back in Canada, and young Kevin said he can now resume his life in Toronto.
"I will go back to my school, to my teachers," the boy said.

Moral of the story: Don't go around stealing other people's passports in a blatent attempt to jump the line for refugee status. |

Uh, would this be the same ACLU that provided free legal assistance to pedophiles in Kansas recently?
Just asking. |

Patriots my ass. Look, if you want to defend the actions of pedophiles, that's up to you. Hardly surprising given your political stances. That does not make the ACLU anything even approaching patriot status. That organization is the very worst of what's wrong with the U.S. today. Oh, that's right, you aren't even a citizen, are you? |

See, the ACLU protects your right to be a pompous know it all blowhard, just like they protect EVERY other citizen's rights.

Did I miss something? AMERICAN Civil Liberties.
So these people were denied asylum in Canada, start cruising around the world and got busted with stolen passports. Now they've had a taste of an American Detention Center. I must be missing the point..

Yeah. Canada screws them out of amnesty, they get busted for a crime in a U.S. territory and put in a detention center, and then Canada comes in and "rescues" them.
It looks to me as if it's Canada's fault in the first place. |

You're always missing it, but we expect no less.
Dr. Hite:
I realize you are one of those arrogant (must be that Quebec French influence) foreigners who is presumptuous enough to lecture Americans about their own national institutions and organizations, but the ACLU was not defending anyone's rights in the case of the pedophiles. You see, Octavius, in our country pedophiles don't have the right to sex with minors (and we'd like to keep it that way if you don't mind). The role of the ACLU is not to ADVOCATE for a cause, but to defend existing constitutional rights, lamebrain.
Take off the sunglasses and see the real world, Chester Molester. |

You see again, I know you have 4 phd's and Talking out of your Ass U is highly respected, but they were defending the rights of people to discuss something. You see freedom of speech is designed to protect the most grotesgue and awful speech (See Larry Flynt) because that is the speech that needs defending. |

Having visited both Toronto and Texas for about a week each, I question the choice of the word 'alive' in the title of this thread. |

let's see, we've had people who have fled a truly horrible government in Iran and tried to find freedom. Instead they were imprisoned, including their son.
We also have people attacking an organization which is a major reason that forums like this can and do exist, they've advanced the rights or women, minorities, homosexuals (Oh.... I see now why roads scholar doesn't like them)
To attack either the ACLU or this family is pretty low. Many Americans criticize foreigners for criticizing america saying, "if it weren't for america you wouldn't have your freedom.' The same can be said of the ACLU and Americans.... |

If what they did was so noble and just, why the hell didn't the Canadian government accept them in the first place?
They weren't imprisoned for being refugees. They were imprisoned for trying to enter a U.S. terriotory with forged, stolen passports.
Quit over simplifying in order to make the U.S. look bad. The Canadians share just as much of the blame as the Americans do, which is the only reason Canada stepped up to take responsibility. |

not sure if you're american or not. but you need to be less sensitive.
AT no point did I single out the US with regards to this family. I think what my country did is awful. I spoke about the family, not the countries involved. I could have said turned away from one country, but I wanted to juxtapose the seeking freedom and ending up in jail... |
